Mattie Jones Obituary

Mattie Ophelia Jones PORTSMOUTH - Mattie "Moma Mattie" Ophelia Jones, 96, of the 2300 block of Oak St., died Sept. 12, 2010 at her residence. She was born in Norfolk County, Virginia, and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Chesapeake, and served as a missionary and member of the Happy Am I Matrons Auxiliary, Senior Choir, Busy Bees and gospel choir. She was also "Mother of the Church." She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Jones; and sisters, Pearline and Lucille Griffin. Survivors include four daughters, Joan Shepherd (Waverly) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Magdaline Yarbra (the late John Alexander), Constance Hines (the late Rufus) and Debbra Jones, all of Portsmouth; one sister, Patsy Holloway of San Diego; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. in New Hope Baptist Church, 1317 Gust Lane, Chesapeake, with Pastor Sammie L. Logan presiding. Burial will follow in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge. "Rock of the family" and "pillar of the community," you will be greatly missed.

My deepest sympathy to the family. Debbra and Connie, your mother was the strongest person I have ever known. My last memories of her will be of us singing karaoke and her big voice. I will surely miss her.

very sorry to hear the lossed of your mother i knew all three sister. i can see pearling and mattie coming done solmon street with them high heel shoes going to church and pearline home made rolls. my mother marie johnson and my aunt eva kidd knew all the family. she will be greatly missed
