June Walton Obituary

June Setzer Walton VIRGINIA BEACH - June Setzer Walton, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother departed this life Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010 surrounded by her loving family. Born June 2, 1933, June was the fourth of five children, to the union of the late Robert H. and Annie B. Setzer in Princess Anne County, Virginia, presently Virginia Beach. She received her earlier education at Saint Joseph Catholic High School, Norfolk, graduating in 1951. She then matriculated to North Carolina Central University and Elizabeth City State Teachers College, respectively, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. Her professional career as an educator began at Union Kempsville High School where she taught physical education, dance and coached basketball. June's teaching career spanned 37 years with teaching positions in Virginia Beach to include Woodstock, North Landing and Salem Elementary schools, culminating with her retirement in 1995. After retirement her passion was assisting in the rearing of her five beloved grandchildren. June took pride in providing day care for each of them through their first year of life. She made every holiday special with unique decorations handcrafted with love. She also took great care in managing the family's real estate holdings, much of which had been family owned since the turn of the century. She also worked with her husband and son in the family owned funeral establishment. Mom was a devout Christian who enjoyed helping others with her kind words and deeds. She was a member of Turning Point Ministries, Virginia Beach and Les Gemmes Inc. Her love of education extended to her church family where she served as Vacation Bible School coordinator for many years. Left to cherish June's memory are her devoted husband of 49 years, Joseph Walton; her beloved daughter and son, Gail Hope Walton and Joseph Francis "Frank" Walton (Ta-Tanisha); her five jewels, Philip Christopher Nelson, Lauren Elizabeth Nelson, Joseph Benjamin Nelson, Autumn Joy Walton and Joseph Robert Walton. She will also be missed by her brother, Robert C. Setzer (Hattie); and a host nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends to include, Naomi Bunch, Mary Frances Hill and Naomi Spaulding; and her beloved four-legged friend, "Little Miss Gabby." In celebration of June's life, a graveside service will be held at noon Friday, Sept. 24, in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. in Turning Point Ministries, 2641 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Michael Steinberg and staff of Virginia Oncology and Dr. Howard Feldman of Geriatric Medicine & Family Practice. Walton Funeral Home Family is being assisted by the members of the Norfolk and Tidewater Funeral Directors Associations.

Dear Mr. Walton, I was sadden to hear of the passing of your mother. But, be encouraged and know that mothers never pass away, they just retire from their earthly jobs but they continue to keep watch over their families.

Dearest Walton family:

Mrs. Walton was my teacher at Woodstock Elementary School. She was a true gem. She shed new light on my understanding of the confusing world we lived in. Later, we attended Trinity Tabernacle and Rock Church together and I became friends with her daughter Gail. Mrs. Walton will be sorely missed. My prayers and support go to all her family and friends. We can take solace in the fact that we will see her again, soon and very soon.

I was saddened to hear that Mrs. June passed away. I've know her all my life and have cherished memories of her teaching vacation Bible school at Piney Grove, and to have her faithfully singing soprano in the Rock Church Choir, while I was minister of music there. To the Walton family, I am going to miss June so much. We spent many hours on the phone sharing family stories. June was my subsitute teacher when I taught at the Beach, and my students loved having her when I was out from school. I remember the beautiful going away luncheon she gave me before I left to journey abroad to teach. My eyes are full as I write, I will truly miss June, however; I will not be selfish because she has gone to be with our Father. Remember, there is joy in the morning. May God bless your family during this time, and I am happy that he placed June in my life.

Dearest Walton Family,

Though many years have passed since days we spent at Trinity Tabernacle - The Barn, I want to let you know that June will always be remembered fondly. We were impressionable children and God placed Mrs. June in our lives to reflect Jesus. What a wonderful job she did and now she gets to be with her heavenly Daddy. I know she is rejoicing and I pray you are comforted during this time as she will be missed. Know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

God bless you,

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My heartfelt sympathy is extended to the Walton and Setzer families. My life has been touched and enhanced by Mrs. Waltons influence as an educator. Both she and Mr. Setzer assisted in my growth and development while I was a student at Union Kempsville High. Our family ties [Riddick-Seltzer] goes back before either of us were born. Hold fast to the wonderful memories she has left for all of us to cherish.
