Dempsey Sumler Obituary

Dempsey Sumler III NORFOLK - Dempsey Sumler III, 75, of the 800 block of Hadley Road, passed away Sept. 23, 2010 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was born April 21, 1935 to the late Marie Corprew Sumner and Dempsey Sumner II in Norfolk. He was a 1953 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Norfolk. Dempsey was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, where he sang in the Male Chorus. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper from 1954-58. He retired after 33 years of service as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and later worked for Old Dominion University as a mail carrier. He is survived by his wife, Esther J. Sumler; two daughters, LaVonne Sumler and ReNee' Sumler Dunman (Kevin); two sons, Tyrone M. Sumler and Jack D. Sumler (Armen); two sisters, Francis Nightengale and Gloria Hodges; one brother, Wilbur Sumner; grandchildren, Tameka Carter, Avanti Aparentado (Rico), Nathaniel Parker Jr., Timothy Parker, Korey Sumler, Jordan Dunman and JaNa'e Sumler; two brotherly cousins, Hugh Reid and Wilbur "Junie" Jordan; and a host of other relatives and friends. A homegoing service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Shiloh Baptist Church, 745 Park Ave. The Rev. Keith I. Jones will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. The family will receive friends 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby St. Chapel. www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com.
