Esta Kincaid Obituary

Esta E. Kincaid SUFFOLK - Esta Everett Kincaid, 91, of Lake Prince Woods, passed away Monday, Sept. 27, 2010. She was born Oct. 11, 1918 in Suffolk to the late Seth Edward Everett and Julia Long Everett. She was the widow of Douglas W. Kincaid and is survived by her son, Douglas W. Kincaid Jr. and his wife Brenda of Suffolk; and a daughter, Julia Kincaid Wheeler and her husband Don of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren, Julia Long Kincaid Hollon and her husband John of Jacksonville, Florida, Douglas W. Kincaid III of Suffolk, Sarah Darden Kincaid Lesko and her husband John of Lynchburg, James Everett Darden Kincaid and his wife Valerie of Sacramento, Calif., Everett Kincaid Wheeler of Charlottesville, Robert Copeland Wheeler of Richmond, and Frances Stuart Wheeler of Charlottesville; seven great- grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jack and Ann Everett Hollon, Edmund Hardt, Douglas Crawford Long and Jimmy Darden Lesko and Everett Cornwall Kincaid. She is also survived by her nephew, William E. "Bill" Blake and his wife Jean of Virginia Beach. Esta was predeceased by her brother, Edward Long Everett and two sisters, Lillian Everett Blake and Frances Stuart Everett. A graduate of Suffolk High School, Esta loved life and her family. She spent many happy days on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where she vacationed every summer with her children and grandchildren. She was a talented artist having studied art in Baltimore and later here in Suffolk. Growing up on Pinner Street, Esta was very knowledgeable about Suffolk history and Suffolk families. In her younger days she taught ballroom dancing, and she enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to dance. She enjoyed gardening and watching the songbirds in her yard. In addition to her paintings, she did needlepoint and provided many beautiful pieces of her needlework to her children and grandchildren. She was a former member of the Nansemond River Garden Club and Suffolk Art League and a current member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Nansemond-Suffolk Historical Society and her Wednesday bridge club. A graveside service will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, at Holly Lawn Cemetery at 1:15 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Keith Emerson in Suffolk. Following the memorial service, friends and family are asked to gather in Randolph Hall at the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 213 N. Main Street, Suffolk, VA 23434; Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, 3373 Pruden Blvd, Suffolk, VA 23434 or Woodberry Forest School. R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family. Esta was a lovely, lively, spirited lady, always interested in what we younglings were up to, patiently listening and quickly absorbing our explanations. She carried herself with poise and confidence even during the years she couldn't walk very well.

I remember driving her to one event and being nervous that the 60-year gap in our ages would prove awkward, but talking to her then was as easy as talking to a friend from college.

You'll be missed this Thanksgiving, Esta.
