Richard Naughton Obituary

Richard L. Naughton HERTFORD - Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Richard Livingston Naughton, 72, of the 100 block of Back Creek Court, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010 in his home. Born in White Plains, N.Y., he was the son of the late Leroy and Eva Krinitsky Naughton. As a child, he moved to Terryville, Conn., where he attended school and then graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1961. A retired Army officer and Master Army aviator, he served in the Army Transportation Corps from 1961 to 1987 primarily as an Army Aviator, accruing several air medals and Bronze Stars during his three tours of duty in Vietnam. After retirement, he continued to work in the Washington, D.C., area for the U.S. Dept. of Transportation and several defense contractors. Moving from Reston, Va., to Albemarle Plantation in Hertford, he enjoyed gardening, cooking, and traveling. He was a member of Hertford United Methodist Church. Surviving are his loving wife Carol; two sons, Chris Naughton and wife Stacey of Fairfax, Va., and Jay Naughton and wife Kimberly of Olney, Md.; three granddaughters, Nikki, Sloane, and Sydney, and a grandson, Kyle. A memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. in the Hertford United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Bowden and retired U.S. Army Chaplain Corbin Cherry. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church following services. The funeral will be held Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the Fort Myer Chapel, Fort Myer, Va. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Arlington National Cemetery. Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Open Door, P.O. Box 721, Winfall, NC 27985. Online condolences may be made to www.millerfhc.com.
