Kienda Jones Obituary

Kienda Maria Jones VIRGINIA BEACH - Kienda Maria Jones, 52, of the 2300 block of Wallington Way passed away Sept. 30, 2010. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Dr. Keith H. Jones; son, Karl Shipley; daughter, Kristen Nicole; and steadfast canine companion, Otis. She is also survived by her brothers, Michael C. and John E. Andrews; her sister, Chantelle M. Phillips and niece Kienda Phillips. She was a native of Tidewater, Va., born in 1958 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. She graduated from Lake Taylor High School, attended the University of Virginia on a swimming scholarship, graduated from Old Dominion University and provided unwavering support for her husband to obtain his DVM degree from Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Kienda worked while at Old Dominion University within the Biological Sciences Support Facility/Health and Safety Department. While in Blacksburg, she worked ardently within the Department of Plant Pathology and Department of Health and Safety at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She also taught science at Baylake Pines Upper School. Her main focus in life from 1998 until her passing, was to manage Holland Oaks Veterinary Hospital. Kienda was an avid cook and lived to entertain friends. Over the years, Kienda poured her love and care into the lives of her children, teaching others and caring for animals. Her love for animals had no bounds. She was the life blood of her husband's veterinary hospital in which he believes clients came solely to see her. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at Nimmo United Methodist Church, Virginia Beach, by Pastor Clark Cundiff and immediate family. Reception at the Church Fellowship Hall to follow immediately after the service. Being the avid animal lover and veterinary advocate Kienda was, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her favorite charity, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, www.guidingeyes.org, Guiding Eyes for the Blind Canine Development Center, 361 Route 164, Patterson, NY, 12563, instead of the Virginia Beach SPCA or Animal Control. Kienda will be greatly missed by her friends and family but more so by her husband and children who will miss her every minute of every day. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements and online condolences may be sent to the family at hdoliver.com.

Dr Jones and family, I am in shock to hear about Kienda. I had no idea until another one of your clients called to tell me. As many others, I feel as though I have lost a true friend. I am honestly at a loss for words and just find it so hard to believe. Her wonderful sense of humor will be greatly missed. Oh, how she could make me laugh. At least I have to be thankful that I knew Kienda and got to share some good laughs, really good laughs, with her. I want to thank you Dr. Jones for sharing her with us.

Dear Dr Jones and Family,

Are prayers are with you. We are sorry to hear of Kienda's passing. She will be missed. Whenever we had to bring the boys (Chocolate and Harley) in, she always made sure that all of us were taken care of and made comfortable with a kind word, laugh, or treat. We take great comfort in knowing that she is doing the same in heaven.

All our love,
Sharon, Charlotte, Chocolate, & Harley Bergen

My favorite story: I came to pick my "son" up after a surgery. Mrs. Jones informed me that he was already eating. he was eating chicken & rice off a fork. When I began to protest her feeding him, she quipped, "...You know, he eats off a fork pretty well for a dog that doesn't get people food!"...It was that quick wit & honesty that would put you in your place while making you laugh. There are a dozen more stories, but I'm sure everyone has them. I know in my heart she is happily cooking for all the animals that passed before her. Though missed here with us, I'm taking comfort in knowing that her "boyfriend" Fritz will again be fed chicken & rice from a fork while she dares me to protest.

Although I didn't know Kienda well, I know I will remember her for many years to come. She shared my pain over the loss of my cat, Dusty, and she gave me a warm hug to try and comfort me. Before she took Dusty to the kennel where she would spend her final hours, she made sure that there was somewhere for her to hide. Perhaps she knew from experience that cats like to hide when their time has come, but I truly appreciated all that she did that day.

Dr. Jones and Family - Please know that my thoughts and prayers have been with you since I heard the sad news. I'm sorry it took me so long to write this but it's hard to find words in times like these.

I put in the picture of Boo because Kienda said she loved their little kitty faces so much. I feel blessed to have known Kienda.

Michelle (and Piper) Story

October 9, 2010

Dr. Jones and Family,

Your Wife (and Mom) was one of the most impressive women I have ever met. Her strength, humor, humility, intellect and love were without measure and I have been, and will continue to be, hugely inspired by her. I was in a bad place 2 years ago, my husband was in Iraq, my daughter was away at school and I was all alone. Your mom taught me how to love my new little puppy and how to properly take care of him and now he is my very best friend. I was going to send him back to the breeder but your mom wouldn’t hear of it and it and now I cannot imagine him not being a part of my life. Thank you for sharing her with so many families who adored her.
Lean on each other, be kind to yourselves. Try to rest and eat and when it feels right, laugh. Your mom would so want that. Whatever you’re feeling that gets you to the next day is the right thing... You have an amazing mom to model yourselves after. Go and do great things.

Sincerely,

Shannon Martin

Dr Jones and family,
For the past 9 years I have had the privilege of visiting your hospital. From day one, you all welcomed me in as a friend. The ongoing shenangins between the 3 of us always made me look forward to seeing you all, and yes, sometimes slightly paranoid, as I was always on my toes of what lay in store for me from week to week. No matter the day I was having, I always left smiling and laughing. I always told Kienda, what I wouldnt give to be a fly on a wall at your home. She was there for me when my father died, and again when my brother died. She watched my kids grow. We talked endlessly of the ups and downs of the Hokies seasons. I never felt more comfortable around anyone as I did her and yourself. I will remember and cherrish all the time we shared together. I only hope I made her smile half as much as she made me. She was like the mother I always wanted and will be forever in my heart. She was loved by all who had the honor of meeting her and rightfully so. Her personality was so infectious and uplifting. I could sit here for days telling of all the things she has done for me especially emotionally. She was without a doubt one of the absolute best friends the lord has ever blessed me with. When she passed, she definately took a piece of me with her. My deepest sympathy to you, Karl and Kristen. I hope that time can mend your broken hearts. If there is anything I can do for you all, do not hesitate to ask, I owe you all so much more than you could ever imagine. Thank You so much. And God bless.
Shannon

Kienda was truly one of a kind. All of our "girls" loved her. We will miss her, her smile & her sense of humor very much. Our thoughts & prayers are with you.

Dr. Jones and Family
I am absolutely shocked and very saddened to hear Kienda is no longer with us. She was a beautiful person inside and out and without a doubt the best wife/mother one could have. Always a smile on Kienda's face, kind words and always going out of her way to help others. Not to mention all the fury animals! She has touched so many lives and will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Kienda was my best friend and partner in everything growing up. We shared in all the ups and downs of two young girls trying to find their way in this world. We were always at one house or the other but always together. Her mom was mine and mine hers. We were in the orchestra together, sat next to each other, switched to viola together, laughed and cried together. I wished we had stayed as close in our adult years but Kienda will always be in my heart. She was a part of me. To Mike and Chantelle, I feel you loss as I have lost a sister. To Keith, Karl and Kristen, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Kienda had a beautiful spirit and soul. This world has lost alot in her passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I was so sorry to hear of this sad news. Kienda and I went to Azalea junior high together. I haven't seen her in many years but I can see from the beautifully written obituary that Kienda stayed true to who she was through her life. She was always kind to everyone and so fun to be around. Everyone loved her and wanted to her friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
