Martha Sawyer Obituary

Martha L. Sawyer SOUTHERN SHORES - Martha Lambert Sawyer, 96, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Martha was the daughter of the late Ella Backus Lambert and William Gideon Lambert. She is survived by her four children and spouses, James and Louise Sawyer of Southern Shores, Jeannette and Joel Waterfield of Norfolk, Douglas and Elaine Sawyer of Virginia Beach and Inez and Cecil Shaw of Chesapeake. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. A beautiful Southern lady, she devoted her retirement years to serving others by volunteering in hospital auxiliaries where ever she lived. Serving in many positions, she also crocheted baby caps and blankets and many a new baby left the hospital wearing a cap or wrapped in a blanket she had made. At church, she participated in the United Methodist Women, Linus Quilters and the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Always devoted to the needs of others, she will be deeply missed by friends and family alike. There will be a service celebrating her life at Duck United Methodist Church Sunday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m., conducted by Dr. John Tyson, pastor. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Caring Hands Ministry of Duck United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8010, Duck, NC 27949. I knew Martha through Fair Oaks Auxiliary and worked with her for many years. She was truly a beautiful southern lady and will be missed by many people. My deepest sympathy to all of her family.
