Eloise Ashford Obituary

Eloise Ann P. Ashford VIRGINIA BEACH - Eloise Ann Poyner Ashford, 92, went to be with our Lord on Oct. 12, 2010. She was a resident of Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach and formerly from Arlington, Va. Eloise was born to Clinton Briggs Poyner and Louise Halbert Poyner at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth on Sept. 21, 1918. At an early age, she moved to Washington, D.C., with her family and resided there until her marriage in 1936 to Samuel Bernard Ashford. The two of them moved to Arlington where they resided for 60 years until her husband passed. She then moved to Virginia Beach to be near her sister, Helen DelFuoco and her family. Eloise was a dedicated homemaker to her loving husband, Bernie and her adopted son, Mark Poyner. She was a loving and caring wife and mother and adored her three grandchildren, Karen, James and Jennifer Poyner. Eloise was predeceased by two sisters, Ethel Flanigan and her husband, Peter and Dora C. Henderson; two brothers, Clinton Briggs Poyner Jr. and James C. Poyner; along with a stepdaughter, Carlyn Nixon. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Helen Poyner DelFuoco of Virginia Beach; her sister-in-law, Helen Shives Poyner of South Carolina; two nieces, Debra Henderson and Carol Atkinson, both of Maryland; six nephews, Daniel Poyner and wife Carol of Maryland, Bruce Poyner and wife Terry of Maryland, Ronald K. McIntosh of Virginia Beach, John Samuel McIntosh and wife Erin of California, Charles J. McIntosh and wife Cindy of Virginia Beach and Scott J. McIntosh of Arizona; many many grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-nieces. Eloise's family would like to send a special blessing and thank you to Lynn, Lori, Chaplain Chris and the staff at Sentara Hospice; Linda, Donna, Doris and the staff at King's Grant House; along with her loving caregivers during her lengthy illness, Judy Robbins, Vicky Jones, and Evanough and Shirley. Thank you all for your love, care and compassion you showed on a daily basis to our dear Eloise. Visitation will be held Monday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. officiated by Chaplain Chris Fosback. Eloise's funeral will be held Saturday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. in Murphy Funeral Home, Wilson Blvd., followed by her burial at Columbia Garden Cemetery in Arlington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sentara Hospice, 535 Independence Parkway, Suite 200, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hdoliver.com.
