Met General Johnson and the Chairman of the board in Winterville NC, at their Strawberry Festival. It was years ago. His music will always be great. I as a teenager back in the 1960s wanted to meet him. Glad for that chance. Sorry for his family's loss. His music will always live on as great beach music.

May the God who gives comfort be with the family of General Johnson.
He was a song writer who wrote songs people could understand and loved to sing. It seems that I'm living at the time when we're losing a lot of our genuine entertainers. But we can look forward to the time when
death will certainly be swallowed up forever and we will see our loved ones again.

My deepest condolences. I am, like millions, a huge fan of The Generals work and salute his passing. Remembering the songs of the R&B, Soul, Beach Music, and all the 'Sounds' that carried us all through those years and Our lives & families... still ringing in Our ears as the singers & stars pass on! The Detroit Sound & especially The Chairmen of Board! There sure will be much more singing in Heaven as never before, and with soul & sand!

I had the pleasure of meeting the General back in the early 70s at the famous IRA Gs beach club. I have been in Germany for many years and have even heard them on German radio. I just smiled and realized how much I enjoyed the "Chairman of the Board" while growing up. Thank you General!

My deepest condolences. I am a huge fan of The Generals work and salute his passing. I was sadly in the process of trying to make contact with him when I discovered the belated news. I am a documentary maker from the UK and am working on a film about the music of the American South in which I hoped to feature The General.
I would still appreciate being able to talk to someone in his family and maybe that way get his wonderful story and music into the film. I can be contacted at [email protected]
A shining light of musical beauty has been extinguished. But its legacy is remembered by those who saw it, by those who sing 'It Will Stand'.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

We have lost a true "Icon" of beach music. General Johnson was a top performer, a great showman, and a real gentleman. I will all ways remember doing the Funky Chicken on stage with him in Columbia, SC during the early part of the seventies, and having the opportunity and pleasure to take him out for a meal when he came to the SC coast later that year.
My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to his family and "The Board Members".
May God bless all of you.

Thinking of you
“Many thoughts of sympathy go out to you today,
And many hearts are caring in a warm and loving way.”
To the family of General Norman Johnson,
I pray that God will continue to bless you and be with you during your time of sorrow. Norman and my brothers were very good friends. We lived on the very same street in Huntersville.
My mother still live in the same home today. The family would often spreak of Norman "The Showman" days and old times. The community was very proud of Norman’s accompliments.
God Bless.

I am saddened to hear the news about General Johnson. I grew up listening to "Carolina Girls", "You've Got Me Danglin' on a String", "Give Me Just a Little More Time", and shed many a tear while listenin'(and singing) to "Patches"...and the list goes on. Some of my best memories were when my boyfriend and I would go to Kidnappers, a bar in Charlotte, NC where Chairman of the Board played frequently! My boyfriend and I were right in front of the stage dancin' and singin'. We've been married 22 years now! My husband is a yankee and was "southernized" by listening to Chariman of the Board and Carolina Beach music! You will be missed! But you will live on in our hearts through all the wonderful memories. Thank you! God Bless.

Dear Sir,
As you used to tell Danny "you done good". For the thirty years I have been going to your shows you did really good - the best. Now as I reflect on the good times associated with your legacy I take away several things: 1) Always do good - you always gave your best 2) Be kind to everyone you meet 3) live life to the fullest - it passes so fast and lastly,4) sing whenever you feel like it even if you can't croon like "The General"
You influenced a lot of people with your songs, wit and humor. We will never forget you! Keep them singing in heaven.
A devoted fan

This picture was taken by my husband YEARS ago. We used to always go to the Boardwalk at Myrtle Beach & hear COB during the week of July 4th! This particular year the General got my sons up on stage! That thrilled them! They are now 26 & 22! We have enjoyed going to COB concerts for YEARS! I am so sorry to hear of the General’s passing! We’ve seen them twice this year without the General & while I love the band, it’s just not the same without that wonderful leading voice! We always look forward to seeing them close down the BBQ Festival every year in Lexington. We are going Saturday and be thinking of him wishing we had just a little more time! The family and band are in our prayers.

I was introduced to General Johnson and the Chairman of the Board 25 years ago by a great friend and an inspiration to me, Kenno Shoaf. Kenno was paralized in the early 70's as the result of a pool accident. Kenno, myself, and some of his other close friends use to pack into his van and take off whenever the General would be comming to town. The General, Ken, and Danny would always come by and say hello to Kenno and give him a pat on the back and you would have thought Kenno was about to get out of that chair and like you say "make a cripple man walk" start shagging. Kenno use to say that the only thing he wanted at his funeral was for the Chairman of the Board to come and sing. Well General, you have beat us up to the big stage but one day soon Kenno and our group will be up on the front row just a singing along with you. I wish we all "had just a little more time" to hang out with you one more time. May God bless your family during this sad time.

A sad day fro evryone that knew General or enjoyed his music. For over 35 years I had the honor to know him, Ken, and Danny, I considered them to be friends. I believe of all the great songs he wrote and have been mentioned here, his Christmas song King of Kings was one of which he was most proud. He told me just before it was released that he thought it was the best thing he had ever written, he was very proud of that song. His legacy in the music that he wrote and performed will live forever!
