Alfred Riddick Obituary

Alfred M. Riddick NORFOLK - Alfred Moore "Shoat" Riddick, 92, of the 1200 block of Manchester Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010 in Sentara Leigh Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Riddick was born in Gates County, North Carolina and was the son of the late Nathaniel J. and Jayney M. Riddick. A graduate of Gatesville High School, he was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a border patrol agent along the Mexican border. A retired furniture and bedding salesman, he worked into his 90s. A longtime member of Larchmont United Methodist Church in Norfolk, he was also a member of the American Legion, a 67-year member of Perquimans Masonic Lodge No. 106 in Hertford, N.C., the Scottish Rite Bodies, and a 62-year member of the Sudan Temple of the Shrine in New Bern, N.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth H. Riddick; sisters, Frances R. Jacobs and Alvis R. Jordan; brothers, Richard H., Nathaniel T., Harry S. and Sidney W. Riddick; a nephew, Carl R. Jacobs; and a niece, Frances J. Stanton. Surviving are a sister, Naomi R. Powell; a sister-in- law, Louise S. Riddick; his loving companion, Frances Mason; 13 nieces and nephews; and many extended family members, all of whom loved him dearly and will miss him beyond words. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Larchmont United Methodist Church, 1101 Jamestown Crescent, Norfolk, by the Rev. Scott Rimer. Burial with Masonic rites will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Gatesville Cemetery. Friends may join the family at the church from 10 a.m. until time of services Tuesday. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Larchmont United Methodist Church or to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Shriners International, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607. I fondly remember the excitement when "Uncle" Shoat would arrive on East Maple Street in Gatesville. Seems he always had some fun gift for the Riddick boys.
