Winifred Tanges Obituary

Winifred Elaine Tanges VIRGINIA BEACH - Winifred Elaine Tanges passed away, Dec. 29, 2010, at the age of 82. "Wini" was born in Nyack, N.Y., to John H. and Ethel Yates Powell Tanges. She grew up in Long Island, N.Y., and worked at her father's dairy operation. After high school graduation in Hempstead Long Island, N.Y., she graduated from Adelphi College, Long Island. Wini received her master's in education from Old Dominion University. She taught English and science fiction writing at Maury High School and was a Star Trek fan. Wini had many hobbies and interests. She was an avid reader and was fond of gardening, traveling, and antiquing. She was a gourmet cook, specializing in Italian and German cuisine. She enjoyed memberships in several lineage societies including: Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865, Daughters of the American Revolution, Princess Anne County Chapter; Daughters of the American Colonists, Norfolk Mace Chapter; Colonial Dames 17th Century, Suffolk Chapter; Dames of the Court of Honor, Virginia Society; National Society Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, Virginia Branch. She was charter member, United States Daughters of 1812, Fort Norfolk Chapter. She served as Chapter Officer in DAR, DAC, US Daughters of 1812. She was also past State Committee Chairman, Virginia DAR. She belonged to Tri Delta Sorority, as well as a member of First Families of Ohio, South Carolina, and Illinois. Wini is survived by her son, Matt Angelo of Virginia Beach; her brother, John H. Tanges Jr. and his wife Peggy; and nephews, David Tanges, of Ormond Beach, Fla., and John H. Tanges III of Phoenix, Ariz., her cat, "Tibby," and many treasured friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Open Door Chapel, in Virginia Beach. Virginia. Colonial Crematorium is handling arrangements.
