John Shafer Obituary

John W. Shafer PORTSMOUTH - John William "Jack" Shafer, 90, passed away Oct. 20, 2010 in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. Jack was born in New York City and was a longtime resident of Portsmouth. He attended Perdue University and later served in World World II as a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. After serving overseas, Jack returned home to his wife and child in Portsmouth where he applied his skills as a civil engineer at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Oceana Air Base, and the Norfolk Air Base. Years later he retired from government service as a division head. Jack was a member of The American Society of Military Engineers. Jack was predeceased by his first wife, Doris Jean McPherson and later his wife, Lola Harrell. His is survived by his sons, John Shafer and Paul Shafer; stepdaughters, Sharon Harrell Edge and Debbie Harrell Eason; grandchildren, Karen Shafer Pace, Greg Harrell Edge and Liza Harrell Edge; great-grandchildren, Victoria Pace, Bradley Pace and Christopher Pace. Brother Jack Shafer was a 50-year member of the Masonic Grand Lodge, the Western Branch Masonic Lodge No. 189 and a member of The Churchland Assembly of God Church. On behalf of John W.
