Irene E. Briggs
of Vestal
Irene E. Briggs, 53, of Vestal, passed away at her residence Monday, July 28, 2008. She was predeceased by her mother, Dorothy Decker; father-in-law, Floyd Emory Briggs; uncles, Uriah Decker and Dennis Saxby; a great-uncle, Leon Burrell; and a great-aunt, Hazel. She is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Floyd E. (Sonny) Briggs; one daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Sean Bacon; and a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Brandy Briggs; five grandchildren, Lily-ann Pierides, Lisa-ann, Lahela, Joseph Jr. Briggs, and Bridgett Slater. She is also survived by her father, Harvey Decker; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Leon and Roxanne and Lee and Joyce; mother-in-law, Verna Briggs (Miller); great-aunt, Dorothy Burrell; aunt, Janice Decker; and aunt, Ethel Saxby; nieces, Alecia Decker and Sharon Lasser; and nephew, Richard Decker. Irene is also survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Bill and Chris and their family, Cassie, Bill Jr. and Brad, Robert and Linda, Kevin and Sonia, Debbie and Larry, David and Linda, Gail and John. Irene was a member of the TOPS Organization Chapter #309 Endicott, she volunteered and worked for Vestal Nursing Center for over 15 years. Some of her hobbies included keeping track of her family genealogy and crocheting.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 12 noon from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, with Reverend Robert Peak officiating. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the memorial home on Wednesday from 10 until service time. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to Lourdes Hospice, 4102 Old Vestal Road, Vestal, N.Y. 13850, or American Cancer Society, Broome County Unit, 13 Beech Street, Johnson City, N.Y. 13790.

I worked at the Vestal Nursing Home in the later 90's and I am shocked to read this. I had breast cancer last year and I can relate to Irene having cancer. My heart goes out to you and your daughters with losing their mother.
