Leonard Aylesworth Obituary

Leonard Edwin Aylesworth
of Panama City, Fla.
Leonard Edwin Aylesworth, known to everyone as "Cy" since he was a young man, passed away September 16, 2008. Cy was predeceased by his parents, Harvey and Eva Aylesworth, Kattelville (Binghamton), N.Y.; his sister, Marion Cunningham; and brother, H. Richard Aylesworth. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary (Portz) Aylesworth. In addition, survivors include his daughter, Ruth (Aylesworth) Bardeen and husband, Irving; son, Chris Aylesworth and wife, Gayle; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Aylesworth, Brendan Aylesworth, Matthew Bardeen and wife, Veronica, Christopher Bardeen and wife, Denise, Jillian Aylesworth Lee and husband, Patrick, Daniel Bardeen and wife, Erin, and Ryan Alyesworth and wife, Laura; and one great-granddaughter, Maggie Bardeen. Cy passed away while a resident of the Clifford Chester Sims State Veteran's Administration Nursing Home. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps (USAF) in 1942, and served through late 1944 as a member of the Flying Tigers, flying a P-40 in missions into China during WWII. He left active duty in 1945, and was discharged as a Major by the USAF in 1958. Married on December 8, 1944, Cy and Mary raised their family in Johnson City, N.Y., and the family shared many vacations at their summer cottage on Sandy Pond off the eastern end of Lake Ontario. Cy was as industrious in business as he was in his family life. He started, owned, and operated three successful businesses during his lifetime. Two businesses were operated in nearby Binghamton, N.Y. before leaving the area in 1974 to open a Safari Campground in Stafford, Va. After selling his own campground in 1979, he continued to work as a representative of Safari (Jellystone Parks) for a number of years, traveling the country assisting other franchise campground owners. Cy and Mary retired to Panama City in 1989, where he became one of the founding members of Emmaus United Methodist Church. Cy was personally instrumental in the construction of the original portion of the present structure on Highway 2297 in Sandy Creek and in development of the church as a whole.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 20, 2008, at Kent Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jack Hankins officiating. We were also fortunate to be Cy and Mary's neighbors, living in that adorable gray house on the corner. My 3 boys loved swinging on the vines, feeding the chipmunks and the special gifts Cy and Mary would bring home from their Jelly Stone adventures. Thank you for allowing us into your family Mary. You are in our prayers. The Benson Family

Aunt Mary, Ruth, and Chris

Our hearts go out to you and each of your families at this time. Cy was a person who loved life and inspired others to do the same. We are so blessed for the times we had together.

Dear Mary, Ruth, and Chris,

Our sincere sympathy at your loss. We loved Cy and appreciated his gifts to his family thru the many years. I fondly remember the times we spent on the farm as children in the summer, romping in the fields and selling produce at the local market. I have treasured your friendship thru these many years.
Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during your time of loss.
How incredible that heaven was richer on Tuesday with the homegoing of Cy and Doris. I look forward to joining them as at 95 years old I know my time is shorter here than on heaven's shores.

Carol sends her love, prayers and blessings to you all, and treasures the time we had together in past visits.

With much love,
Pauline

There are not many people that will be missed as much as CY. When a person touches so many others during a lifetime, it's always hard to when they are no longer here.

I remember the first time I met Cy and Mary at the Safari in Stafford. I don't think I've ever met a person that made such an initial impression like Cy did.

While I had many opportunities to share time with him through the years, it was never enough. I loved to listen to him tell stories about anything, but especially his days as a "FlyingTiger".

I will miss him. I know his family is losing a great man that meant so much to so many, but just remembering his big smile and the twinkle in his eye has to make anyone feel good from having known him. I can't help but feel we are all losing a small bit of history as well as well as a Great American!

Cy will be sincerely missed by all that his life touched.

Miss Mary,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. What a wonderful, full life Cy lived and your devotion and love were evident every day. Rick and I so wish we could be with you in this time of sorrow. Know that we are with you in spirit. Throughout the difficult times ahead lean on the knowledge that Cy is with The Lord and he is free of his suffering. We love you. Rick and Christy Carroll

We will always remember the friendship you extended to our young family when we lived next to you in Johnson City, enjoying the fresh corn from Bob June's field and watching the chipmunks dart in and out of the bank between our homes. Our thoughts and blessing to you, Mary.

have so many fond memories growing up on the farm, and all of us so close. I think of those wonderful years so often. "Uncle Cy" will be sadly missed. Love to you all.
