Russell Wadsworth Obituary

Russell France
Wadsworth
formerly of Binghamton
Russell France Wadsworth, 90, died Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at St. Agnes Hospital in Catonsville, Md. Russell was a Binghamton area resident for over 50 years, and was recently living in Ellicott City, Md., to be closer to his family. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara Jane (Adams). He is survived by two children, Charles E. Wadsworth and his wife, Jill, Ellicott City, Md., and Jane L. Wadsworth and her husband, Patrick Todd, Silver Spring, Md.; and many nieces and nephews. Russell was born July 22, 1918 in Childs, Pa., to Grant and Helen (Griffiths) Wadsworth, and was the youngest of seven children. He grew up near the coal mines of Scranton, Pa., and developed a love of trains, as his father was a locomotive engineer. Like many others during the Great Depression, he learned how to be frugal. Russell served with the Army in WWII, and was stationed in France and England. Upon returning to the US, he met the love of his life in Barbara Jane Adams and they were married in 1951. Russell had great passion for the outdoors, camping, hiking, wildlife, sports, skiing, ice skating, baseball, tennis, making home repairs and exploring new places. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Binghamton. Russell worked for IBM Corp. as an Electronics Technician for 42 years. In his retirement years, he enjoyed gardening, baking cookies and pies, dinners with family and friends, and using his computer. Russell was well known and loved for his dry sense of humor, twinkle in his eye, gentle and sweet disposition and simple way of life.
His life will be honored and celebrated on Saturday, September 20, at 10 a.m. at Parsons Funeral Home on 71 Main Street, Binghamton, N.Y. Calling hours will be Friday, September 19 from 6-8 p.m.

Having known Russell for only a short time, he was a pleasure to be with and i enjoyed his company very much. I looked at him as a master of atheletics. he was always talking about skiing and sports and how much he enjoyed being on his son's catamaran. He will be greatly missed at Heartlands, as he made friends with everyone he met. He had many friends at Heartlands. i I looked forward to meals at Heartlands because we often shared a dining table together. i wish i had known him a much longer time.

I am so saddened to learn of Russell's passing. He was such a sweet, gentle man and a wonderful friend to my father, Gene Lenander who also resided in Heartlands. My father has been hospitalized and I have not yet told him the news.

Please accept my deepest sympathy on your loss.

Russ and I worked in the same area in IBM for a number of years and occasionally played tennis. I remember him as one of the nicest people I have ever met!

Our family was so fortunate that our dad lived a wonderful, healthy long life of 90 years. Not only were we guided by both our mom and dad during our childhood and young adult years, but my sister and I, along with Jill and Pat, had the unique opportunity to intertwine our middle aged years together with our dad.

Our dad, is not only "Dad" to us, but was, and remains our close, close friend, confidante, coach, and our continued inspiration. Today, as will be every day going forward, we would like to celebrate our dad's life. He lived his life to the fullest, and his sense of humor was with him to the end. In our final few weeks together, we enjoyed dinners at our favorite Italian restaurant, watching the Olympics, a celebration of Jane & Jill's completing a triathlon, sailing on Chesapeake Bay, picnic lunches in the park, a trip to the airport to watch the plane landing, and baking cookies and rhubarb pie together. But mostly, we just enjoyed our time together.

While we are sad to see him go, and will miss him dearly, Dad is now reunited with our mom, and I'm guessing that they are catching up on old times, baking Aunt Cora's cookies, sharing a piece of strawberry rhubarb pie and polka dancing with the stars.
