Dear Tony,
By pure coincidence I came across your Father's obituary on the internet. I was very saddened to learn of his passing because I remembered him as a very kind and gentle man, as well as a great teacher. I always believed he cut me some extra slack in class because like you I was one of "Sarge's wrestlers". To be honest, I can't remember any other teacher I had in high school, but I remember your Dad. May you and your family find peace in God's love and know in your heart that through the Lord's promise you will see him again at the resurrection.

Dear Donatelli Family - I used to live on Anson Road (right next door) way back in the 1960's and 1970's. I used to say "Hi Nicky!" to Mr. Donatelli when he'd arrive home from work. I'll always remember his kindness. I tell my Italian husband that Mr. Donatelli was my first Italian love ;)
God bless Mr. Donatelli and the Donatelli Family...

On A Colleague

I know no one among those who worked in the U. E. English department during the years that Nick Donatelli chaired it who didn’t love him. It was appropriate that Nick taught the course on mythology because, despite his modest stature, he was a god among men; or at least he thought so when he stuffed our mailboxes with his self-titled “Thunderbolts”, pages of department matters we needed to know, but being literate, didn’t need to sit through boring meetings to learn about! Along with a cadre including Gene Camadella, George Cardone, Bruce Ellis, Mike Gance and his journalist colleague Bob Gallagher, he made the high school the vibrant, fun place to work and learn that it was back then. His wit and intellect have become part of the leadership style in English department chairs who have followed him.

I can only hope that his spirit hovers over U. E. as it now bleakly treks through “the testing years”. What Nick taught us was that “No Child Left Behind” meant all of us as educators have to retain that childlike sense of joy and mischievousness in life and in the classroom if we truly want to be our best and help our students to be theirs. Nick was our inspiration, our leader, our comic, our shoulder to lean on, our repository of knowledge, our friend, a god and a star! In the circle of the Southern Tier he was recognized and welcomed by politicians, restaurateurs, grocers, bankers–former students or not–because of the “beam” of his being. I know that today the emptiness we feel is greater than that of fans who have been told the final time: “Elvis has left the building.”

To Mr. Donatelli's family, my sincere condolences and prayers. He was a wonderful man, and one of my favorite teachers. He was also a co-worker of my father, Glenn Blair, and conveyed such kind words of sympathy at his passing. May God bless all of you. Please know that he is most fondly remembered.

Jackie, Dan, Tony, Lynne and Mrs. D, You are all in my prayers. What a profound loss. Mr. D's spirit filled any room with love. Always happy to see a gaggle of girls stirring Fritz up and tormenting Tony. It does take a village to raise a teenager and I am so thankful Mr. and Mrs. D were part of that village for me. With Love, Peggy
