George Keenan Obituary

George J. Keenan
of Otego
George J. Keenan, 84, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford. George was born on November 20, 1923 in the Bronx, the son of K. Raymond and Viola (Kappas) Keenan. He married Ethel (Haege) Keenan on September 4, 1948 in S.S. Joachim and Anne Church in Queens Village. She predeceased him on February 28, 2008. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, life member of the American Legion Post in Queens Village and a life member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #3. George served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater. In 1985, he moved from Kings Park, New York to Otego. He was an electrician for 61 years with the IBEW Local #3. George was a quiet intelligent man who enjoyed analyzing the stock market, sports statistics and horse racing. A skilled wood worker, his children and grandchildren have cradles, rocking horses and Christmas ornaments as lasting treasures. He enjoyed music from the big band era and was known for his singing. He was a big St. Louis Cardinals fan and Duke basketball. He loved to feed the birds in his backyard, loved to read and do crossword puzzles and jumble puzzles, and played the harmonica. George is survived by his children, George R. Keenan and his wife, Pat, Worcester, Massachusetts, Pat Murphy and her husband, Rich, Oneonta, Bill Keenan, Williamsville, New York, Kathy Costello and her husband, Joe, Windsor, New York Ken Keenan and his wife, Adria, Charleston, South Carolina, Susan Marchica and her husband, John, Westminster, Vermont and Robert Keenan and Eileen Mugford, Otego. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christine, Raymond and his wife Beth, Brendan, Brian, Jennifer, Jonathan, Joe, Kirsten, Tim, Kelleen, Christopher, Shannon, Katelyn, Matthew, Danielle, Michelle, Michael, Courtney; one great-grandchild, Hunter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2008, in St. Mary's Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor officiating. Interment with full Military Honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the New York State Veteran's Home, 4207 State Hwy 220, Oxford, N.Y. 13830 or to any Disabled American Veterans Chapter. Friends may call on Monday, September 29, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.
