George "Jack" Smith
of Gaston, S.C.
Jack Smith, 72, of Gaston, S.C., formerly of Newark Valley, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home Monday, October 13, 2008, after a 4 1/2-year battle with colon cancer. He went to be with Jesus Christ his Lord with his loving wife, Edie by his side. Jack was born October 2, 1936 in Endicott, N.Y., to the late George and Evelyn (Garlow) Smith. Jack graduated from Newark Valley Central High School in 1954 and then served with the US Army during the Cold War era. He retired from IBM, Owego, N.Y., in 1987 and was presently employed with Lexington County, S.C. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Gerald (Bub) Smith. He leaves behind his wife of 39 years, Edie (Russell) Smith, Gaston, S.C.; his daughter, Lisa Burkett and grandson, Austin Burkett, Alexandria, Va.; a stepdaughter, Kathy VanOsrand (Mark) Lepkowski, Pelion, S.C.; three stepsons, Douglas (Jan) Haughton, Winston Salem, N.C., Randy Haughton, Winston Salem, N.C.; and Leroy (Penney) Haughton, Elgin, S.C. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, 1845 Cedar Creek Road, Pelion, S.C., with Military Honors. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial donations should be directed to the S.C. Oncology Associates, 166 Stoneridge Dr., Columbia, S.C. 29210. We wish to thank all the staff at the SCOA for their loving care and a BIG thank you to Dr. Fred Kudrik and nurse, Carla Wadsworth.
