Sidney Harcave, 92, of Binghamton, passed away peacefully Friday, October 24, 2008, at the Susquehanna Nursing Center, Johnson City. He was born on September 12, 1916 in Washington, D.C. to Leon Katz and Rose Katz Harcave. He was predeceased by his wife, Norah Harcave, in 1997. He is survived by a cousin, Avi Katz, Birmingham, Alabama; and many friends and colleagues, all of whom enjoyed his colorful stories and conversations. His friends included Mark and Patty Plichta and sons, Dustin and Derek, Lakeworth, Fla., Julie Dranichak, former student and friend, Endicott, and special friend, Tammy Hodges, Johnson City. Sid earned his Ph.D. in 1943 at the University of Chicago. He was a Professor of History Emeritus at Binghamton University. He was hired by Binghamton University in 1953 and retired nearly 30 years later in 1982 as a professor of Russian and Modern European History. Sid was the author of a standard history text used in American universities for many years, several books and a number of published articles. He was in the editing stage of his memoirs at his passing. He was an active volunteer with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, an avid reader and enjoyed playing Scrabble and completing the NY Times crossword puzzle.
