Rita Hogan Obituary

Rita E. Hogan
of Binghamton
Rita E. Hogan, 84, went home to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 29, 2008. She died at the Elderwood Healthcare Center in Waverly, N.Y. after battling the ravages of Alzheimer's disease for over 15 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Mary Kennedy Hogan; her brother, Edward P. Hogan; her sisters, Edna, Mildred and Mary Hogan; and a nephew, Richard D. Hogan. She is survived by her nephews, Edward (Barbara) Hogan, Apalachin, and William (Betty) Hogan, Leraysville, Pa.; and many nieces, nephews and their families. Rita was a graduate of Binghamton High School and went to work for Ansco in the lab. Her true love was education and history, so while she worked at Ansco, she attended Harpur College, graduating with a Master's in History. She became a professor at Broome Community College, where she taught U.S. History and Western Civilization for many years until her retirement in 1991. She volunteered for many years as a member of the Broome County Historical Society and Roberson Memorial Museum. She was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Church, where she compiled a book of its history for their 75th anniversary celebration. Rita was devoted to her sisters, Mildred and Mary, with whom she lived all her life until Mildred's death in 1995. She loved gardening and researching her family genealogy and treasured her international trips with her friend and colleague, Shirley Osmun, and especially their last trip together in 1988 when they went to Ireland and she met some of her cousins. Special thanks to the staff of Elderwood Healthcare Center for their loving care of Rita.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Parish of Sts. John and Andrew, 1263 Vestal Ave., Binghamton. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to the Southern Tier Alzheimer's Association, 401 Hayes Ave., Endicott, N.Y. 13760. Arrangements are by McDevitt Brothers Funeral Home, 88-90 Front St., Binghamton.

Rita and her dear sisters were wonderful neighbors to my mother, Emma Nocciolino. There is comfort in knowing they are all together again in heaven. To all the family, we send our sympathy. I know how important all of you were to them.

My mother, Gerry Pierson, has been Rita's "roommate, for the past 9 months. During that time, we have grown to love Rita. Each day, we spoke with her and gave her updates on what was happening, not just at Elderwood, but everywhere in the world. With her great love for history and life, we know she liked to be "filled in" on whatever was going on. While she may not have been able to communicate with us in the same fashion as we communicated with her, we like to think that she loved hearing our daily "tidbits." I feel blessed to have known Rita for it is through her that I know how fortunate I am. I know God has reserved the absolute BEST possible place for her in heaven and it is my greatest hope that she is, once again, happy and able to do all the things that she wants to do. We wish we could attend her service, but that trip would be too much for Mom and I know Rita would not want me to do anything that would make life harder for Mom. But, please know, we are there in spirit and will never forget our dear friend, Rita. We have lost a very important person in our life, but we are so very happy that she is in heaven. Mary Ann....I hope you get this message for I know you know how much Rita meant to us. Take care and if there is anything we can do for you, you know where to find us. Much love

Bill and Betty, Ed and Barb, Maryann and family,
I am sorry for your loss and know that God has taken Aunt Rita to her heavenly home. The sisters are finally together again. God bless them they worked all their lives to get into Heaven and now they can all rejoice. My prayers are with you all.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I had the wonderful opportunity of knowing Professor Hogan as my first college history teacher. Her support and encouragement stayed with me even though it has been at least 30 years since I walked into her classroom as a non-traditional student. May she know that she truly kindled a love of history in this person and will be remembered for a long time. God bless and comfort you.

Ms. Hogan will be sorely missed. She had a real interest in helping students, even if we did not always fully appreciate her at the time. God bless!
