Jack Serkin, 82, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2008. He was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and was raised in Bayonne, New Jersey. Jack was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country during World War II. Following his time in the service, he graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. Jack was working for the General Electric Company when he moved his family to Vestal in 1961. He retired from GE after 30 years. He was President of the Upper New York State Chapter Institute of Environmental Sciences. Jack was a former treasurer and house chairmen of Beth David Synagogue; he is a lifetime trustee of Beth David. He served on the Chabad of Binghamton Board of Trustees and as a volunteer at Hillel Academy, Chabad and Beth David. Jack is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marlene; sons, Rabbi David Serkin, Silver Spring, Md., Stuart and Molly Serkin, Fairfield, Conn., and Paul Serkin, Teaneck, N.J.; grandchildren, Ariel (David) Samuels, Sharon, Mass., Esther and Sarah Serkin, Conn., Tova (Yair) Yehuda, Israel, Yosef and Devorah Serkin, N.Y.; and great-grandson, Aaron Daniel Samuels.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 3, 2008, at Beth David Synagogue, 39 Riverside Drive, Binghamton. Interment will follow services in Beth David Cemetery, Conklin. Shiva will be observed at the Serkin residence. Maariv services at the Shiva home, 7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
