Stephen Klimow Obituary

Stephen Klimow
of Johnson City
Stephen Klimow, 87, of Johnson City, passed away on Veterans Day, November 11, 2007. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Dear Klimow; and is survived by son, Colonel (Ret.) Matthew Stephen Klimow; daughter, Dr. Susan Micks Klimow; grandsons, Daniel A.T. Klimow and Maxwell Micks; and his sisters, Anastasia Fontana and Helen Otocka. Known affectionately as "Dutch," he was the son of Matthew and Elizabeth Vanek Klimow. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death (Nicholas, Henry, Alexander and Rose). For decades beginning in the 1920s, the Klimow family grocery store on the corner of May and Colfax Avenues in Binghamton was a neighborhood gathering place for adults and hang-out for children. Dutch and his brothers formed many sports teams and clubs in their youth, and were known as "The Aristocrats," a rye name for their club given the poverty they knew as boys in the 1st Ward. After Pearl Harbor, Dutch "joined up." He participated in the Tennessee Maneuvers in the early 1940s and shipped out to the European Theater of War with the 639th AAA Battalion, 49th Anti-Aircraft Brigade, 1st Army. After encamping in Aldermaston, England, the 639th crossed the channel and on December 16, 1944, were located near St. Vith when the Battle of the Bulge began. Dutch's unit came under heavy artillery fire and, with out regard for his own safety, used his own body to shield his wounded comrade, Eddie Socha, until the bombardment ceased. The 639th held a key road junction one mile from the infamous massacre of American POWs at Malmedy. Later in the war, Dutch and his unit reinforced the critical bridgehead over the Rhine River at Remagen, and Dutch was there the day the bridge collapsed. His unit also passed through the notorious concentration camp at Buchenwald. Dutch befriended one of the young liberated prisoners who spoke Slovak, and after the war met up with him in NYC. This was a deeply moving experience for Dutch. Dutch visited the battle sites again in 1977, and had a grand reunion with the Belgian family that sheltered his gun crew for many days during the war. After the war, Dutch returned to Binghamton where he met the girl of his dreams, Dorothy Dear, at the Polish Community Center. They married in 1950, and the Klimow family lived for over 50 years on Pearl Avenue in Johnson City. Steve worked for Ozalids Corporation for over 30 years. He was a lifelong member of John Hus Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir and was a Deacon. Steve and Dorothy's social life revolved around the John Hus Beacon Club and the Stonehenge Recreation retreat along the Genegantslet River near Greene. He was an amateur bird watcher and naturalist. Dutch was well-loved by his many nieces and nephews and grandchildren, who he took on nature hikes and bird watching outings. Like his brothers, Dutch loved baseball. In his later years, he was a member of "The Lightening Bolts," who won the N.Y. State Senior Championship and represented N.Y. at the Senior Olympics. Dorothy and Steve traveled frequently, visiting their son, Matt at his many military postings and daughter, Susan in Alaska. After Dorothy passed away, Dutch and his two sisters, Stasia and Helen, were inseparable and could be found at many social gatherings around the Triple Cities. There was never a gentler or kinder sole, a more generous uncle, loving brother, or devoted father.
A Memorial Service will be held in his honor on December 1st at 4:00 p.m. at John Hus Presbyterian Church, 47 Glenwood Ave., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905. Reception immediately following at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to John Hus Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are by the Barber Memorial Home, Inc., 428 Main St., Johnson City.

Many times when I lived in Binghamton on Berlin Street I would walk through the West Side Bakery down Colfax Avenue to Klimow's Grocery store. I have so many fond memories of when I was a little girl and getting waited on by Mr. Klimow. My mom, Helen Tobey, passed away over three years ago at 88 so I can understand how much he will be missed. God bless you all.

Matt and Susan,

Your Dad was always so involved with our close knit neighborhood. He always made sure that we would have a ride to school events and was there for many or all of our sports events. Years ago, when my Dad passed away, Steve was always there if I wanted to listen. He was very special to me. Always a friendly smile. Please extend our heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. Your Dad is in a better place. May the souls of the faithful departed rest in eternal peace. Amen...

Sorry to hear about your dad. I'm sure I must have met him from one of our events with our youth group at West Presbyterian. I remember playing basketball with Matt on the church team. Wow, Matt a Colonel and Sue a Dr...your parents must be so proud.

Dear Matt, Edie, Daniel and Susan, as well as others in the Stephen Klimow Family:

Both Valerie and I are saddened to here of the loss of your dearly beloved Father and devoted Grandfather, and extend this Special Greeting and Heartfelt Prayer to you and your family while you give comfort to each other during the days ahead.

As you join together with your family, good friends, and perhaps even some of “Dutch’s” life-long colleagues and close Army Buddies in preparing for the Memorial Service on December 1st, at John Hus Presbyterian Church in Binghamton, Valerie and I would like to pass on to you and your family the following Special Thoughts while you are huddling together in kinship, reflecting on the special memories you hold dear in honor and recognition of your devoted father and the wonderful life and times he spent with you. The words have been bathed in love, steeped in prayer, wrapped in hope and served on a tray of optimism.

In a man’s life, his true worth can be measured by his family and friendships…no amount of money or fame can eclipse them. In friendship, there is a language that we understand only with the heart. Maybe that’s why it appears to others sometimes that we seem to take our dear loved ones and good and faithful friends for granted…the words of love and gratitude are spoken silently. Sometimes, though, it’s good to say to our good friends and loved ones, in so many words, how they have made our world a little warmer, a little brighter, and a little friendlier!

May the Blessing of Almighty God rest upon you and all your loved ones and upon all your work and Worship done in His name. May He give you Light to Guide you, Courage to Support you AND Love to Unite you.

With Lots of Love for the Klimow Family and Loved Ones,

The Miske Family from El Toro, CA

Matt, Susan & family,

I am very sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

I still have very fond memories of "card games at the Klimow's" from our teen years. Both your Dad and Mom had a gift for being able to bridge the generation gap between adults and teenagers, relating to us as people and not just kids from the neighborhood.

While it's been a while since I last saw your Dad, I remain privileged to have known him

Sorry to hear the sad news. I remember many a card game with him and grandpa (Bohus). I also have him to thank for getting me into bird watching. When we were kids at Stonehenge he would show and tell of his tales of the day and what birds he had encountered. He was always nice to me (and everyone for that matter) and one of my favorite Hussites.

He will be missed...
