Edward Farthing Obituary

Edward C. Farthing
of Port Dickinson
Edward C. Farthing passed away at home on November 28, 2007 with his family at his side, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Ed faced his illness like a man, as he did every other obstacle that came his way in his 67 years. He is predeceased by his parents, Victoria and Charles Farthing; beloved grandparents, Jennie and Henry Lisi; mother and father-in-law, Evelyn and George Buteux. Ed will be forever missed by his wife, friend and partner, Pat, whom he married on Thanksgiving, November 26, 1964; his children: son, Ted, Portland, Oregon; daughter, Jennifer, New York City; and son, Nick, Rochester, N.Y., each of whom he adored, respected, and was so proud. He is survived by his caring siblings: sister, Sandra Dundon; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and George Klein; brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Becky Farthing; sister, Suzanne Croteau; and sister-in-law, Ann Dumas; as well as special cousins, Elaine Colangelo, Donna Polenz, and Barbara Caudill; and the family's best friend, Mary Benedict. Ed's extended family includes many special nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, clients and business associates, especially Barbara Gallo. Ed was a licensed REALTOR for over 37 years, and he operated his own real estate business for many years. He was currently associated with Coldwell Banker GTD. Ed was a member of St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church and their Holy Name Society, proud member and former president of Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 112, A&G Sportsmen Club, Mountain Trail Bowhunters Club, and the Greater Binghamton Board of REALTORS. Ed was never too busy to talk with people and help them out. He loved to tell a joke and put a smile on people's faces. He loved his family, his faith, time at the cottage at Sandy Pond, bowhunting, boating, traveling, gardening, mowing the lawn on his John Deere, and playing poker. The family wishes to thank Dr. Jonathan Kloss and the entire team at Broome Oncology, who always had ready smiles, sincere compassion, and tried very hard to help Ed in his fight with leukemia. Also, a warm thank you to the entire staff of Lourdes Ross 1 and Lourdes Infusion Center who treated Ed and his family like their own while he was a patient. Special thanks to Lourdes Hospice for their help and support during Ed's final days, and to Donna Ross for her compassionate care. Sincere gratitude to Father Tim Taugher and Sister Karen for their many visits. Finally, a special thank you to all the unknown donors whose blood kept Ed going during this past year.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Hillcrest, Saturday at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Friday from 4 - 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Ed may be made to the Samaritan House, 11 Fayette St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13901; or Mom's House, 770 Harry L. Drive, Johnson City, N.Y. 13790; or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Also, please consider a blood donation if you are able.

To Pat & family, Helen & Becky and all who knew Ed:
Ed Farthing was everything people have said he was, a gentleman, a friend, a realtor, and a few more good things. At one time, he also carried the title of "Resident Plumber" at General Hospital. That was during General Hospital's renovation. Those were the "good old days." Now I have another friend in Heaven. May God Bless you all in your time of sorrow.

Dear Pat, Ted, Jennifer and Nick,
I know that there is nothing I can say that will ease your pain right now. I can tell you that although it may never go away completely, it will change, become more like a dull ache than a stabbing pain.

Tim and I wish you peace and comfort, now and in the months ahead.
