Arlene D. Underwood
of Cortland
Arlene D. Underwood, 75, of 13 Leon Ave., Cortland, passed away December 2, 2007 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Underwood was born November 6, 1932 in Marathon, the daughter of the late Andrew and Rena Sliter Davern. Mrs. Underwood had been an active member of the Homer Avenue United Methodist Church in Cortland. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and sister and will be sadly missed. She will be fondly remembered as the hat lady, often wearing colorful and fancy hats whenever she went out. Mrs. Underwood is survived by two sons, Jerry (Laurie) Underwood, Cortland, and Paul (Indigo) Underwood, Endicott; one daughter, Kerry (John) Walluk, Pittsburgh, Pa.; two brothers, Phillip (Lynda) Davern, Marathon, and Larry (Susan) Davern, Pineville, N.C.; one sister, Jeannine Cristelli, Endicott; her beloved grandchildren, Sarah (Bill) Swartz, Matthew Walluk, Jessica (Matt) Gray, Amanda and Luke Underwood; great-grandson, William Alexander Swartz.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Homer Avenue United Methodist Church in Cortland with the Rev. Stephen Sigourney officiating. Interment will take place in the Marathon Cemetery in the spring. Friends are invited to call on Friday evening, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the American Cancer Society.
