Charles Rice Obituary

RICE, CHARLES B., of Providence and Little Compton, was born in Dayton, Ohio and grew up in Pelham, NY. He was the son of the late Paul North Rice, Head of the Reference Dept. of the NY Public Library, and the late Genevieve Briggs Rice.

After service in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Rice was an international banker for Chase Manhattan and worked in New York City, Panama and the Dominican Republic.

He later worked for Manufacturers Hanover Bank in NY before coming to RI in 1985 to join RI Hospital Trust Bank as a commercial lender. Prior to retiring, Mr. Rice also worked for the FDIC in the Dept. of Liquidation.

A graduate of Colby College, Mr. Rice was an Eagle Scout and active in Boy Scouting as well as an avid outdoorsman all his life.

Mr. Rice was active in many community organizations in RI and NY, including serving as President and Treasurer of the NY Congregational Home for the Aged in Brooklyn, NY and Treasurer for Hamilton House in Providence. He was a member of Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims, Brooklyn Heights, NY and of Central Congregational Church, Providence, RI.

He is survived by his wife, The Rev. Rebecca L. Spencer, and 3 sons, Ezra and Thomas Rice of Providence, and Professor Eric N. Rice of Hampton, CT; 2 grandsons, Nathaniel and Gregory, also of Hampton; 2 sisters, Lenore Hale of Seattle, WA and Rachel Sheridan of Newton, MA; and 8 nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr. Rice's memory to the Central Congregational Church, 296 Angell St., Providence, RI 02906 or to the RI Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box H, Providence, RI 02901, for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

A service of celebration for his life will be held at the Central Congregational Church on Sept. 6 at 10 a.m.
