Charles Trowbridge Obituary

TROWBRIDGE, CHARLES EASTMAN, 82, of Boca Grande, Florida, and Little Compton, Rhode Island, died suddenly at home on August 30, 2008.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara (Nightingale); four stepchildren, Thomas Frederic Woodhouse of Medfield, Massachusetts, Sarah Woodhouse Murdock of Scituate, Massachusetts, Christopher Greene Woodhouse of Cornelius, North Carolina, and Phillip Jay Rodgers of Waialua, Hawaii; 5 grandchildren; a brother, Robinson Cooke Trowbridge of Vero Beach, Florida, and Westport, Massachusetts; and 3 nieces. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Havens Rodgers.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of Charles Eastman Trowbridge, Sr. and Adelaide Cooke Trowbridge. He graduated from high school in Kearney, Nebraska, where his father was an air base commander. He then served in the Army Infantry in Korea. Following his military service, he attended Brown University and then began a lifelong career in Providence with Industrial National Bank, later known as Fleet Bank. He worked for the bank for more than 37 years, serving in both the Personnel and Trust Departments.

A most avid golfer, he was never happier than when on the links with one of his regular foursomes. Staunchly independent, yet deeply sentimental, he was dedicated to his wife, his family, and his pets, and could be counted on for a good hug, a good laugh, and good advice. His strength of character, sense of humor, and judicious counsel were valued by all who knew him.

He was a member and former president of Sakonnet Golf Club in Little Compton, Rhode Island, a member and former Board member of Lemon Bay Golf Club in Englewood, Florida, and a life member of the Agawam Hunt Club of Providence. He greatly enjoyed and took pride in his involvement and efforts on behalf of these clubs.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6th at St. Andrew's by-the-Sea in Little Compton, Rhode Island. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Friends of Little Compton Nurses Association, 115 East Main Road, Little Compton, Rhode Island 02837, or to the Boca Grande Health Clinic, P. O. Box 517, Boca Grande, Florida 33921. Arrangements are in the Care of the Waring-Sullivan Funeral Home, Fall River.

Dear Mrs. Trowbridge (Aunt Bonnie) and family:

We wish to extend to all of you our deepest condolences. Please realize that you that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

We know how very difficult it is to say goodbye to a very special person. As you know we all had to say goodbye a few years ago to our dear Granny Smith (Mrs. Charles M. Smith). But I am certain that "Granny," as she is in Heaven now, was there to greet her dear nephew, Charlie, with open arms and with all her love. God bless.

I am so sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. He was a great guy. I worked with Charlie in Industrial National's personnel department a long time ago. He clearly will be missed by many people.
