Mary Griffin Obituary
Born Anne B. Griffin in Providence, she was daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Murphy) Griffin. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on February 2, 1946 and professed her vows on August 16, 1951. She obtained a B. Ed. from the former Catholic Teachers College and an M.A. from St Louis University, where she became a registered dietitian.
Sister taught in elementary schools in the Diocese of Providence before she was appointed to Salve Regina University where she taught for 23 years. In 1982 she became the dietitian for Mount St. Rita Health Centre until her retirement in 1992 to Our Lady of Mercy Convent in Attleboro. She was admitted to Mount St. Rita Health Centre in 2001.
She leaves a cousin, Sister Margaret Murphy, of Pawtucket, and her religious family, the Sisters of Mercy. She was the sister of the late Eileen Griffin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. in Mount St. Rita Chapel. Visitation will be prior to the Mass at 9:15 with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:15. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Mount St. Rita Health Centre, 15 Sumner Brown Rd., Cumberland, RI 02864 will be greatly appreciated. As a student at Salve Regina University in the 1960's, I remember
Sr. Mary Joannes as the Director of the Home Economics Program. Sister was well respected by one of my classmates who studied with
her and later taught in the Aquidneck Island public schools for 28 years. My condolences to the Sisters of Mercy and Sr. Margaret Murphy RSM on the loss of a gentle and caring woman.

Having taught at Salve Regina with Sister Joannes, I remember her soft, caring persona and her quiet way of relating and sharing her knowledge to countless students. She was a pioneer in her field. She will be missed.
