Sheryl Jacobson Obituary

JACOBSON, SHERYL ALEXIS, DMD, MS, died on September 4, 2008 following a very short, but valiant battle with cancer. Her facile mind, strong personality, and sharp wit were with her to the end.

As one of the first women to graduate from the Tufts Dental School in a 3-year program, she was a female pioneer in the Oral Surgery Residency Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. She then ran a pediatric dental clinic in Chelsea, MA for Massachusetts General Hospital and was on the clinical faculty of the Harvard Dental School. Following this, she became a Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, completing her MS in Management in one year. Then, she began working at the Colgate-Palmolive Company, at first in the 'Flavor and Fragrances' component of the Research and Development Division. She moved on to professional and international marketing working with school and professional programs world-wide. Choosing to move back to her family, she continued her professional growth in the Lending Officer Professional Development Program with the Bank of Boston followed by her own consulting practice. She had a wide range of interests including classical and world music, hand-crafted textiles, and a love of exploring other cultures and ethnicities through reading, participation, and travel.

She is survived by her husband Fredric C. Friedman, EdD of Providence, RI; her father, Lt. Col. Ralph Jacobson (USAF, Retired) of Newton, MA; her brother Keith E. Jacobson of Newton and Swansea, MA; and many special and caring friends. She was predeceased by her mother Beatrice (Smookler) Jacobson and just before her own illness by her Portuguese Water Dog, Maggie Mae, her devoted companion and friend.

The funeral will be held at Sugarman-Sinai Memorial Chapel, 458 Hope St., Providence TODAY, September 5th, at 11:00 AM with burial at the Baker Street Cemetery in West Roxbury, MA. Shiva will be observed at her home at 51 Adelphi Avenue, Providence, RI on Sunday-Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 PM.

Sheryl requested that in lieu of flowers, any contributions in her name be made to 'Best Friends,' a no-kill animal shelter, 5001 Angel Canyon Rd., Kanab, Utah 84741.

Fred,
I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Sheryl was a very special person that I feel so fortunate to have met and befriended. We didn't get to meet and talk often, but I already miss her terribly...she had that unique ability to make others feel important and comfortable.
