William DiVona Obituary

DiVONA, WILLIAM S., 83, of Saunderstown, formerly of Cranston, passed away Monday at home. He was the husband of the late Theresa M. (Roy) DiVona.

Born in Providence, Bill was a son of the late Michael and Sarah DiVona.

A US Navy Veteran who served during WWII, Bill was also a 20-year veteran of the Cranston Fire Department, a member of the Cranston Firefighters Association and the VFW Post 2396, Bill loved to share his time and talents with his family and many friends. An avid bowler, golfer, and card player, Bill kept a busy schedule. He helped to care for and maintain a busy household, cooked for those he loved, in spite of the fact that a previous illness prevented him from taking normal meals, and even proved his athletic prowess by playing Wii at home with his family, and often beating all the competition.

He leaves a son, Michael DiVona, his wife, Vicki, of Florida; a daughter, Donna Feeley, her husband, Terry, of Saunderstown; a sister, Tessie Pazienza of Cranston; five grandchildren: Eric and Joshua DiVona, Sarah, Michael and Alixandra Feeley; and seven great-grandchildren: Brett, Allie, Evan, Niklous, Eric, Kalie and Tyler. He was the brother of the late Nicholas DiVona, Frances Ferri and Lena Salzillo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 11am at St. Bernard Church, 415 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the RI Blood Bank, 405 Promenade Street, Providence, RI 02908, an organization Bill avidly supported until cancer left him unable to make the regular blood donations that had become so important to him.

You probably don't remember me (we are cousins). My father was Tom Paliotti. Your mom and dad were always such a lovely couple.
I am sorry for your loss.

I grew up with Bill for the first 18 years of my life, until he left for the Navy. I was at his "going away" party, and I didn't see him again for 30 years, but I never forgot him. Saw him at the "Feast", and I never saw him again. I will always remember him milking his goat, and squirting us with a stream. Those were the days! Anyone from Green Ave., or Briggs St. in Cranston will remember. Please E-Mail me , if you care to. May God rest his soul, and my deepest condolences to the entire DiVona family.

Billy DiVona was my friend. I am a better person for that, he also was a true American Hero, not just because of his service to his country and community, but because he did it without any thought to the impact on him. He believed in what America stood for and lived it everyday.

He was also a sweet loving father, grampa, and friend and had a great sense of humor. I am truly sorry I cannot be there to say goodbye.

love to all

Donna,Michael and family,
How can you ever forget a friendship of over 70 years. Billy was a true friend in every sense of the word. He and Terry were always there for us. Their love for their family and friends was always evident in all they did. We loved them both and are so saddened to see this chapter in our lives close. We shared so many happy memories through the years. They will always be in our thoughts and prayers and so will the rest of your family of whom they were so proud. Our love to you all.

Donna, Michael and Family--

Billy was amazing. He was a true friend in every sense of the word. As they say, If you have one "true" friend in this lifetime, you are blessed...and that we are. It's not everyone who has the honor and privilege of having the same friend for more than 70 years. Saturday's will never be the same for my parents without Billy...they are heartbroken.

Personally, I will never be able to look at a quarter without thinking of Billy; as he always gave me the current "missing" one in my collection. I will treasure my pictures of he and my folks and remember all the happy times, especially the feast. Billy added a great deal of joy to our lives and he will be sadly missed...but never forgotten.

My deepest sympathy and heartfelt wishes for strength and courage in the days ahead.
