Rudolph Ricci Obituary

RICCI, RUDOLPH C., 89, formerly of Victor Ave., passed away peacefully October 4, 2008 at the Elmhurst Extended Care Facility. He was the husband of the late Virginia (DiCenso) Ricci. Born in Cranston on January 27, 1919, he was a son of the late Beniamino and Raffaela Ricci.

Rudolph served proudly in the US Army volunteering from 1940-1945. He served overseas in Europe and during the Battle of the Bulge, was captured and held by the Germans as a Prisoner of War. Rudy was one of the many Americans who was forced to march without food or shoes 80 miles through the snow. During these dreadful times of inhumanity and starvation he lost 80 lbs. He also was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantry Badge among other military honors and discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the DAV Chapter I and the Italian-American War Veterans.

Following his discharge from the Army he worked at the A&P Bakery in Cranston for 25 years, also serving as president of Local #5, Bakery and Confectionery Workers for 20 years. He then worked for the RI Department of Transportation Cherry Hill garage until his retirement.

He is survived by his family, a son, Dr. John R. Ricci and his wife Janet, two grandchildren, Christina V. Ricci and Eric J. Ricci, all of Lincoln, and several nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Peter Ricci, Ernest Ricci, Dr. Benjamin Ricci, Phyllis Moretti, Lena Sindoni, Celia Matraccia and Marie Matrone.

Rudy was always ready to give a helping hand to anyone who needed him and he did it with a smile. His infectious enthusiasm for life and splendidly outgoing personality probably helped him best when he was detained as a prisoner of war. Rudy never gave up on people and seeing their best qualities and he best exemplified the patriotism and idealism of The Greatest Generation in all that he did. Rudy's principles and love of country shaped his life and he persevered to choose his own way. There can be no greater celebration of a man's life than that. He adored his family, loved America and was a proud New York Yankees fan.

His funeral will be held Saturday at 10 AM from the ROBBINS FUNERAL HOME, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave, North Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in Church of the Presentation, 1081 Mineral Spring Ave. Entombment with full military honors will be at St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Calling Hours Friday 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

Please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of your Father. He must have been a wonderful human being. We were cousins, although I did not know him.

Dear John and family...

I was very sorry to hear of your father's passing. I'm not sure you knew this when I had you as a student, but your Dad was my next-door neighbor while I was growing up on Laurel Hill Avenue in Cranston. I lived at 604, and the Ricci family lived at 606. Your Aunt DeeDee was my baby-sitter, and the two families were very close.

I remember when your father returned home from WWII. He had gone through a lot overseas, and it showed. Everyone was determined to fatten him up, because he came home so thin--no skinny!

Later on we got to know your mother, and we were saddened by her early death. I haven't been around Johnston, RI much these days because I live in Vero Beach, FL now, and have been here since I retired from JHS in 1990.

I will always remember the good times we had with all the Ricci siblings; and will remember with lots of affection the good times we had at JHS!

Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of my friend and my family's friend, Rudy.

Dear John and family,
Your dad was our neighbor when we lived on Phebe Street in Johnston. He was more than a neighbor to us; he was the grandfather we never had. He would bring us bread everyday. When we had our first child, he brought her cupcakes almost everyday! He and little Ricci would come over and say hi to our dog all of the time and give her a treat through the fence. We almost didn't move because we didn't want to move away from him. We are so thankful that our paths crossed.

Dr. John Ricci and family:

My deepest condolences go out to you at this time. We have just lost one of our greatest heros. Rudy's story is America's story. He fought to free Europe from dictatorship and to make peoples' lives better in WWII. He served under the proud red, white, and blue flag, and his love for this country was a bond as strong as that between a mother and daughter. I am proud to call Rudy a role model in my life. I know that he is in a better place now and that all he asks for in return is for you and your family to stay strong and always fight for what is right. God Bless you, Rudy. I love you, always.

I am so lucky to have gotten to know his son over the years, who is a second father to me.

John,
We are deeply saddened by the loss of your dad. I remember your parents well, they treated me like a second son when we were kids. I remember the G.I. Joes in the basement while your mom did laundry on that big old wringer machine. I also remember the good times camping at fishermans memorial.I have many fond memories as do you, no one can take these away as they will live in our hearts forever.
God Bless you and your family in your time of need.
