To the Family:
When I look back at all the teachers I had at Chester Barrows, none pushed me harder than Mrs. Graziano. I remember being 7 years and being the class chatterbox. She knew I was a bright girl and just wanted me to prove myself. Math was tough, but she helped me through it. Finally, one day she was sick of me talking and sent a note home to my mother. I was so scared I flushed the note down the toilet. Feeling satisfied, I went home.
That night, the phone rang. It was Paula Graziano wanting to speak to my mother. The janitor had found my note in the toilet bowl and returned it to its owner. They had a nice talk about me and the next day there was a new note that had to be signed and returned by my parents, both of them!
At the time, I was so mad I couldn't wait to get out of second grade. Looking back though, she was the best elementary school teacher I could have ever asked for.
My sympathies,
Heather (Mill) Wahl

Dear Family,
I had Mrs. Graziano, formerly Miss Higgins, for second grade at Chester W. Barrows school during the 1976-1977 school year.
There were many things that Mrs. Graziano taught me such as reading and spelling, but the biggest thing that she taught me was how to take responsiblitly for my own learning.
It was from her structured classroom that made me the Cranston science teacher that I am today.
I returned to her second grade classroom at Chester Barrows during the 1994-1995 school year to read to her class for reading week. It was such a pleasure to see and speak to her again after all those years.
She was so very proud of me when I told her that I was a science teacher at Cranston East.
Mrs. Graziano was a master teacher who will always be remembered.

Michael, We are so saddened by Paula's passing. I will always remember when Bob brought me to Rhode Island to meet the family and how you and Paula welcomed me in. That is something I never will forget. I enjoyed my phone calls with her. She was a wonderful person and she will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time

It was 1974. I was an eight-year-old tomboy with a hearing problem that challenged me in the classroom. But I had a teacher - then Miss Higgins - who wasn't going to let that happen. She was gentle and encouraging as I blossomed. Years later, when I was working as a newspaper reporter, she called me to read to her students during Reading Week. She called me a success story. There is truly nothing like a wonderful teacher who can make an eight-year-old tomboy - or an adult - feel special.
I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that I am just one of hundreds of lives she touched over the years. What a legacy she has left.

Michael, So sorry to hear of Paula's passing. She was a great influence in my children, Amy and Michael's education.
I always enjoyed my conversations with her. I think of her everytime I make a recipe that she was kind enough to share with me.
