Leonard was born and raised in Detroit. He graduated from Pershing High School in 1936. Leonard met Gloria Turkowski and the two were married in July 1942. Soon after they married, Leonard was called to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the service he worked for the Chrysler Corporation for 25 years and also Stillson Machine in Roseville for 15 years.
Leonard was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and watched them faithfully during good and bad times. He was also very skilled with leather craft and designed and made numerous leather handbags, wallets, and belts during the 1950s and early 1960s.
When Leonard retired in 1984, he and Gloria moved to Benzonia.
Leonard was an avid and skilled fisherman and knew all the "hot spots" in the Frankfort and Benzonia area. He hand made many of his lures and shared his knowledge of fishing with all who were interested. Leonard loved all animals and took in numerous stray cats and fed the wild animals around his home. In the late '80s, he coached the girls softball team for Paul Oliver Hospital.
When Leonard's health declined, he moved into the Orchard House in Frankfort, and spent his last days there with his daughters and beloved cat Blackie.
He is survived by children William Michael Self (Georgianna), Jaclyn (Denny) McCartt, Mary Jane Lambertz, Linda (Tom) Kelly; sisters, Ida Stewart and Jane Myers, 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by wife Gloria and sister Evelyn.
