Ernest Johnson Obituary

Published by Record-Eagle on Sep. 8, 2008.
LAKE LEELANAU — Ernest Alfred Johnson, 91, of Lake Leelanau, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Munson Medical Center. Ernest went home to be with his Lord, with his loving family at his side. His spirit ascended to his heavenly home accompanied by the beautiful music of a harpist provided by Munson Hospital.

Ernest was born May 11, 1917, at the family home in Lake Leelanau, the son of Even Johnson and Andrea Petersen. On Sept. 10, 1946, at the First Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay, he married Julia Grant. She survives. Ernest was blessed with 61 years of marriage.

As a young man Ernest served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWII.

A highlight for Ernest was his 90th birthday open house celebration, a trip to Norway to explore his heritage and a trip with his in-laws to explore Alaska.

Ernest always was so appreciative of what anyone did for him; he never failed to thank them for their acts of kindness. He enjoyed playing cribbage with his wife and caregivers, playing euchre and watching the Tigers.

He was a long time pillar and faithful member of the First Lutheran Church of Suttons Bay. Ernest was a native son of Leelanau County, a man of faith and character.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Julia; his children, Allan (Gayl) Johnson, Ron (Deb) Johnson and June (Stephen) Schaub; four grandchildren, Beth, Jeremiah, Jane and Kristin; and two great-grandchildren, Paige and Quinton.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel; two sisters, Leah Combellack and Carola Ask; and a brother, Leonard Johnson.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay. Burial will be held at a later date in the Lutheran Cemetery, Suttons Bay.

Memorials may be directed to the First Lutheran Church, PO Box 189, Suttons Bay, MI 49682.

Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.

My Uncle Ernie was more than just an uncle to me. He was an example of what a Christian man should be like. It is my prayer that I am able to model myself after him as a husband and a father. I loved Uncle Ernie very much and I will sadly miss him, but I know he is at home with his Lord, Jesus Christ.

Praise God for a long and rich full life for Ernie. He and Julia are both very dear to the heart of my Mom & Dad. More special friends could never be found. May God be with you in your time of sorrow as Ernie's presence here on earth will be greatly missed.

Ernie was a wonderful man, husband, father and grandfather (great grandfather).
He touched everyone who had the honor of meeting him with his calm kindness.
His love for my children and grandchildren will forever touch their lives as well as mine.

Ernie was truly a special man and will live in our hearts forever. Our love goes out to you Julia. The strength, love, faith, and devotion that you and Ernie have always shown is an inspiration. You told us when we moved to Suttons Bay that you would be like our Grandparents since we were so far away from most of our family, and yes, you and Ernie will always be like our Grandparents. Ernie will be missed, but we know that he is happy and at peace. His memory will live on in the hearts and lives of many.
