L. Whitehurst Obituary

L. Howard Whitehurst Mr. L. Howard Whitehurst, 81, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009. The service will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. Whitehurst, son of the late Luther and Kathleen Griffin Whitehurst, was a native and lifelong resident of Greenville. A graduate of Greenville High School, he received his Bachelor of Science and Masters degrees in education from East Carolina University. From 1950 until his retirement in 1982, he taught at Robersonville High School. For 26 years he volunteered at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, and was a recipient of the Governor's Award for outstanding service as a volunteer. He was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church, North Carolina Association of Education, National Education Association, and the Association of Classroom Teachers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James G. "Bud" Whitehurst and John M. Whitehurst. He is survived by his sister in-law, Louise Whitehurst, of Kinston; special friends, Larry and Kay Lloyd and Edna and David Woolard; two nieces and one nephew; his beloved dogs, Molly, Zeke, and Dugan; and three beloved cats, Bo, Sarah, and Baker. The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
