To the family of Nick A. Dewhirst,
I am a senior at Winfield High School in Alabama. I play basketball and golf and am a very active in my local church. In order to help us understand the full power and meaning of Veteran's Day, my Government teacher is having us write to the family of a lost one. A large part of my family has faught in major wars from World War II all the way up to the current war on terror. Many have died in combat so I have a general idea of the sacrafices that have been made for this country. Nick will always be remembered as a hero. I can never express the greatness of my gratitude towards him. Everytime I step out onto the court or onto the course, his courage and bravery will be remembered. As I celebrate Veteran's Day, Nick will be on my mind.
Respectfully,
Nick Carothers

To the family of 1st Lt. Nick Dewhirst:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

To the family and parents of Nick I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you.

To the family of 1LT Dewhirst,

My name is MSG Conner. I was Nick's Tactical Non-Commisioned Officer at West Point. I am currently serving in Iraq. It was with a heavy heart that I learned of his untimely passing. Nick was a professional above all professionals. I knew once I met him that he would do a great job as an Officer both conducting missions and taking care of Soldiers. It was a pleasure knowing him and serving with him the time I had. I would like to offer my deepest condolences and I hope you can one day find comfort in knowing that he was well respected and Soldiers believed in him.

I want to join the Dewhirst family and friends in grieving for, remembering and honoring 1st Lt. Nick Dewhirst. I believe that every one of our soldiers is truly a son or daughter of all Americans and we are so very proud of them. Nick sounds like a very remarkable young man. He achieved so much during his life and I am sure must have touched and enriched the lives of so many. Our world is definitely a better place now and in the future because he was here. Now we can be comforted that he is in that eternal and better place where he no longer can be touched by war, hatred, pain and death. I extend my deepfelt sympathies to his family and friends and promise to pray for each of you every day. You have a wealth of memories of Nick that will play and replay in living color, over and over again in your minds and hearts to bring you joy, laughter and yes, comfort in the future. His entire life and the smiles, laughter and the words he spoke are all within you and God will bring them to you as you need them. Nick, we will never forget you, your life or your great sacrifice of that life for all of us. We honor you and long for the day we will be in the "better place" where you are now. Enjoy it and rest in peace, our son.

Nick and I were in ROTC together at ERAU. We were happy for him when he received his appointment to West Point, but we were also sad to see him go.

We all loved Nick, and at the time, our friend Phil Mace said it best: "Dewhirst is the innocent; the goodness in all of us; that should be protected and never see the horrors of war. We go to war so that men like Dewhirst may live."

It is hard to write this through the tears- Nick was the best of all of us. His spirit is embodiment of the truest American ideals. I am deeply saddened by your loss. What a high price to lay on the Alter of Freedom. We are all diminished by his loss. I will never forget him.

To the Dewhirst family,

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Nicks' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.

...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

Nick, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and so many other brave soldiers and know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you Nick and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home could sleep without fear and know that we are safe. To the Dewhirst family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Nick and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to 1LT Nick Dewhirst our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Nick. And to Nick it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Nick, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Nick’s family and loved ones.
