Wilda Ensign Obituary
Wilda Coleman Ensign, formerly of Salem, Va., died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, in Temecula, Calif., where she had resided since 2004. She was the daughter of the late Lucy Woody Coleman and Robert Reed Coleman, of Bassett, Va., and widow of John Clarke Ensign, to whom she was married for 41 years. At the time of her marriage, she was executive vice president and general manager of Mick-or-Mack Stores Company of Roanoke and Salem. She was active in church and civic affairs of the Roanoke Valley, was governor of the 19th district of Quotas International, and had served on the boards of the United Way, McVitty House, the Roanoke Advertising Club, and was a long time member of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem until her move to California where she attended St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church. She was a long time member of Hidden Valley Country Club and had served as chairman of the Ladies Golf Association. She was chairman of the Consumer Advisory Committee of the National Association of Food Chains and was a guest speaker at numerous meetings of food manufacturers and brokers. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ensign; her stepdaughter, Joan Ensign Bundy; her brother, J.R. Coleman; and her sisters, Angie C. Johnston, Iris C. Koelz, Madolyn J. Coleman and Alma C. Dudley. She is survived by her stepson, John C. Ensign Jr. and his wife, Janet; and their children, Brian and Beth, of Wilmington, N.C.; her stepgranddaughters, Allison Hirth and Tracy Lancaster, both of North Carolina; nephews, Robert R. Dudley, of Temecula, Calif., William C. Johnston, of Smithfield, Va., Reed Goff, of High Point, N.C., and Rocky Coleman, of Iaeger, W.Va.; a niece, Waima C. Collins, of Winchester, Va.; and a sisterin-law, Lucille P. Coleman, of Iaeger, W.Va. A Requiem Eucharist will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 9, 2008, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Temecula, Calif., and then again 10 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem, Va. Commitment to follow at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, Va. Contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church or St. Paul's Episcopal Church, or the church or charity of the giver's choice. Arrangements in California are by England Family Mortuary in Temecula and arrangements in Virginia are by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, Va.
