Arthur Matthews Obituary

Arthur N. Matthews Jr., better known to all who knew him as "Artie", was born a Yankee in South Bend, Indiana on April 23, 1932. He was the first of five children born to Arthur Sr. and Helen Ridenour Matthews. The family moved to Roanoke, Virginia after his dad was offered the position of vice president/actuary of Shenandoah Life Insurance Co. He was graduated from Jefferson Senior High School, in Roanoke, and entered VPI as a Cadet. He left Tech and served in the United States Army during the time of the Korean Conflict. Artie met Bettie Jeanne Jones, his future wife, during Christmas holidays of 1956 in Roanoke. They were married almost a year later on December 21, 1957. He then returned to Tech and received his BS degree in Business Administration in 1959. To this union were born two children, Judith (Judy) Matthews Leeming and Arthur Nelson III (Tres) Matthews. Art, and his fine example of a life well-lived, was a great role model. These two devoted and loving children continue to be a comfort to their mother and will join her in both mourning his passing and celebrating his life. Artie retired as Director of Juvenile Court Services for the 9th District after a long and distinguished career. He was a talented musician, skilled on the clarinet, but more at home behind a set of drums. He worked with many different bands and formed his own group known as the "Socialaires". Dixieland music was his favorite because he felt it "reached your soul" on so many levels. He especially enjoyed playing at the "Occasion for the Arts" in Williamsburg because his music reached so many people who might otherwise have never heard that true New Orleans style. Sleep well, dear Artie, and make sure the Angels keep their harps tuned. Arrangements by Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, Virginia.

Dear Aunt Bettie Jean, Cousin Judy, and Cousin Tres,
We were sorry to hear of Uncle Artie's passing. We have many fond memories of times our families spent together. Many of those memories involve Smith Mountain Lake. I for one shall never forget his wonderful salads that no one has come close to duplicating. We are sorry that as the years have passed, our families have not spent time together. Bob, Mom, and I hope that you find comfort and healing in the memories you have of such a wonderful man. May God bless you and be with you in your time of need. Like the petals of a rose opening in a dew kissed day, God will welcome Uncle Artie into heaven and watch over you while on Earth you stay.

Love,
Aunt Annabelle, Cousin Bob, and Cousin Edie

Dear Bettie,

We were terribly saddened to hear about Art's passing. I feel privileged to have known him in connection with our work on behalf of the Cadillac-LaSalle Club. Your and Art's energy and efforts were largely responsible for establishing the Hampton Roads Region of our fine club, and it is a tribute to both of you that the Region has grown and flourished. Art's passing was noted at the CLC Board Meeting last week, and all of us who knew him will always remember him fondly.

Bettie and Family,

I met Art when we started the local chapter of the Cadillac club but soon found out that he also was a fan of Studebakers. We also talked several times about Juvenile Detention issues since I was the Va. Beach project manager for building their new detention center. Art was a man of many talents and interests. Just think, now he is where the cars never rust or breakdown and he can drive what he wants and have all the music he wants. Good luck in the coming days.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all now. I know Art loved his family with all his being. And he loved his cars. I bet he's driving a Solid Gold Cadillac now. He certainly touched the lives of lots of people, including me. Art was my supervisor for many years at the Court Service Unit and I will miss him.

Dearest Bettie Jean and family,

I'm so sorry about Artie's passing. I remember you fondly from my childhood, and have happy memories of your visits. Mama always thought the world of all of you, and I'm sure she'll be singing up there while Artie plays the drums! Much love to you. Please call me - 722-4342.

Bettie and Family-
Though Art came into our life just a few years ago, we found him to be a unique and special person. Through our mutual admiration for Cadillac/LaSalle automobiles we shared a bond. May you find comfort in knowing he rests in the loving arms of Christ.
In Christ,
Jim and Barbara Stansbury
