What a great sports friend to the Valley. It is A HUGE LOSS to our area. The Valley was blessed to have Bob and his wife settle here shortly after Vandy. I worked in the same building and he was the type that worked LOTS of hours. loved his job, but most of all he loved his friends! He always got a smile out of me when I was feeling bad, which now I find out was nothing compared to his health. He was a special and strong man beating the odds and not letting it get the best of him. My family will miss him dearly as a friend and a man that had the backbone to stand up for what was RIGHT.
RIP Bob!
Now enjoy heaven with no more suffering. I see you talking to all your friends in heaven, so now we have another star to gaze up and think of ALL the good times! I bet Dad is visiting you as he thought so much of you and our family is grateful for what you did for him as well as all the Baseball HOF members.
God Bless!

Binki,
The Pope family and the Northside Basketball program are thinking about you and praying for you. Both you and Bob have been a special part of my life and my family. In the early years of our relationship Bob was a tough journalist who wanted answers. I knew I had to always be ready when he called. After he retired from the Roanoke Times and called me about being our scorekeeper, I was deeply honored by his request. I will really miss him at the basketball games. He was always a friend and someone I will miss very much.
Sincerely,
Billy Pope

I considered that I had made it in Roanoke journalism when Teits put me in the regular rotation of writers covering local high school football. In recent years I proudly grew to call Teits "friend," and I loved to make him laugh at our frequent lunches. We've lost a big bat from our lineup, and the Star City is a little less brighter for it.

As a former basketball player, you could always expect a great story the next day from Mr. Teitlebaum. I enjoyed getting to know him over the years as he will be greatly missed.

Binky, you are in my prayers. I will always treasure the many conversations with Bob, as a coach at Northside and as a broadcaster with WROV, especially the trips with Jim Carroll at the wheel. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Teits always cared about people more than sports. It was in his story-telling and his sense of humor that always made me understand his passion for life. We will all miss his zest, zeal and zany baseball stories, but we are all better for having heard them.

I will never forget my time with Teits in the Sports Department of The Roanoke Times. He was lively, brash and funny, but most of all, passionate about high school sports and baseball.
Whenever I would edit his copy, he would say, "Amanda, you can't teach an old dog new tricks."
But the old dog certainly taught this young puppy about dedication to journalism.
Binki, my prayers and my heart are with you.

When I was a kid Bob would take me to Friday Night football games and let me walk the sidelines with him...what a thrill. My prayers to Binki and the rest of the family. God Bless you all.

I had just started at the paper and working the pm (afternoon edition) rim when I was instructed to rewrite a paragraph from one of Teits’ game stories. I called him at home to let him know and, let’s just say he didn’t take it well. Five minutes later, Teits called back to apologize and told me he understood I was doing my job. The exhale was audible. He was old school in the best possible way, devoted and professional, and the RT&WN was a better place because of him. RIP.

I enjoyed working with Bob many years at the Times. He was a pro. If there was something he was responsible for, there was no doubt about it getting done -- and on time.
Most of all, I just enjoyed talking sports with him, especially baseball.
RIP Teits you will be missed.

Binky- you remember few people in your life and Bob was one of them for me. My closest friend in college and one of the great winners in life. Very sad day for me. If there is anything I can do please let me know, it is a short drive from up here in Northern VA.

My prayers go out to the family. Every year at Christmas I think of Bob and Binki. As a child that grew up next to them, they would come over on Christmas eve and play bridge with my parents. I always knew they hid our presents at your house and you played until we went to sleep.

I knew Bobby and his family since I was a small girl living in Nashville. I was apprised of his situation about two years ago and have admired his courage and determination throughout this journey.
Please know that I share your sorrow at the passing of this very nice man.

Dear Binki,
I was one of the lucky ones- visiting with you and Bob on your stop over in St. Louis while on your river cruise. I hadn't seen Bob since graduating Vanderbilt, and it was wonderful to have breakfast with you both. Memories of this and other times in Nashville will be cherished.
Please accept my deepest sympathies- my wife Jane joins in. May the love of your many friends and family carry you through your grief.

I first met Bob as a coworker at the Roanoke Times but we became friends jabbering our way through endless innings at Salem Avalanche games. I learned a lot from Bob and he might have learned a little from me. He and Binki were kind enough to invite me into their friendship and I value them both. RIP Teits.

Bob beat the odds time and again from the moment he was born; he was told he was living on borrowed time. Well, Bob borrowed 69 years and we were lucky and privileged to be a part of his life. He had become part of our family and will be missed greatly. Thank you for all you brought to our lives Bob.

First, Teits made me mad.
Then, he made me laugh. Once you got past that pretend growl of his, you realized what a fun guy he was to be around at the Times office. If I ever get to write a newspaper sitcom for TV, Teits will have a role.
To the man who I could never seem to beat in our many years of Rotisserie Baseball, I raise a toast (Yoohoo, of course) and pray you will rest well.

teits worked for me at the roanoke times for many years. it could have been a tough transition for him from the world-news, but he handled it professionally. I don't think I ever knew anybody who loved baseball as much, but in everything he did, he was always thorough. He handled his many ailments without comment, and not many people ever had to endure everything he did. But he always worked with a smile on his face. Rest well, my old friend.

Bob was gracious and helpful to me when I first began working at The Roanoke Times in 1997. I enjoyed getting to know him, and always enjoyed our conversations when I would see him at a Salem Civic Center event, an Avalanche game or anyplace else around the valley. Bob loved sports and loved to talk about them. When I was named sports editor a couple years ago, he was one of the first to congratulate me. Many on our staff maintained a close relationship with Teits after he retired, and we will all miss him.
