Mary Scarce Obituary

Mary Louise Hambrick Scarce, 98, of 2497 Whitmell School Road, Dry Fork, Va., died Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health since 2001. Mrs. Scarce was born in Lignite, Va., on October 4, 1909, the daughter of the late Edward Bland Hambrick and the late Joanna Hambrick Hambrick. She lived her early years in Beaver, W.Va., and had lived most of her life in the Whitmell community of Pittsylvania County. She was a homemaker and she had taught school for two years in Rawleigh County, W.Va., and for two years at Mount Hermon. She also taught piano to area children and adults for 50 years. She was a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church. Mrs. Scarce was married to Irving Huesman Scarce, who preceded her in death. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a sister, Ellen Lillian Hambrick. She is survived by two daughters, Joann S. Strader and husband, Eugene B. Strader, of Toano, Va., and Mary Lou S. Beck and husband, Harvey W. Beck, of Dry Fork; three sons, Kenneth C. Scarce and wife, Linda P. Scarce, of Dry Fork, Thomas E. Scarce, of Roanoke, Va., and Richard N. Scarce, of the residence; three grandchildren, Stephanie S. Scarce, Jonathan K. Scarce and Courtney C. Scarce. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2008, at the Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel with the Reverend Susan Hannah officiating. Interment will be in the Scarce Family Cemetery in Dry Fork. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at the Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Tunstall Fire & Rescue, P.O. Box 575, Danville, Va. 24543. Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel is assisting the Scarce family.

To KC, Dick, Tommy, Mary Lou, and Joanne, I'm so sorry for your loss. Even though i haven't seen your mom in many years, she will always be part of my good memories of Whitmell.
