William Ligon Obituary

William (The Duck Man) Ligon, 88, of Salem, Va., went to his heavenly reward on Saturday, August 30, 2008. He was born November 26, 1919 in Shenandoah, Va. to the late Peter and Alice Varney Ligon. He was preceded in death by his son, Melvin Jeffries, his brothers, Harmon, Chester, Dan and Richard Ligon, his sister, Betty Scherer, and his dog, Mutt. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Tempie Elizabeth Ligon; his son, William P. Ligon Jr., of Salem, Va.; his daughters, Jacqueline Simpson, of Salem, Va., Alice Correll and husband, Phil, of Salem, Va., Tina Ligon and husband, Gary Walters, of Golden, Colo.; his grandchildren, Sam and wife, Wanda Fuller and Pat and husband, Clay Cantrell, of Williamston, S.C., Cindy Bolick, of Marietta, Ga., Elizabeth Thomas and boyfriend, Tim Greenway, of Elliston, Donald and wife, Lynda Ligon, of Salem, Va., Colleen Roy, of Salem, Va., Paul and wife, Linda Correll, of Sterling, Va., Hannah and Eli Walters, of Golden, Colo., and Phyllis and husband, Mark Spangler, of Elliston, Va.; his 14 great-grandchildren; his 12 great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Barbara Pereira, of Hampton, Va.; and his sisters-in-law, Mildred Ligon, of Salem, Va. and Dorothy Clark, of Roanoke, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a machinist by trade and worked for Walker Foundry for many years. After retiring, he enjoyed gardening and visiting with his customers and friends. He also enjoyed feeding the ducks and geese on nearby Roanoke River. He was seen for many years walking up and down the road carrying his feed bucket and being followed by his dog, Mutt. He spent many hours avidly working the daily puzzles in the paper. A graveside service will be held 12 noon on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Sherwood Burial Park with Military Rites to be presented by the DAV Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem.
