Ray Robinson Obituary

Ray Lewis Robinson, 71, of Salem, Va., passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2008. He is survived by Jeanne, his wife of 52 years; two daughters, Leigh Trippe, of Nelson County, Va., and Leslie Prillaman, of Salem. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Lina Prillaman; two sons-in-law, Fritz Trippe and Carlyle Prillaman; brother and sister-inlaw, Elton and Mabeline Robinson; sister-in-law, Joyce Robinson; in-laws, James and Jean Alderman and Roger and Becky Alderman. He was a navy veteran, serving in the late years of the Korean War. His entire lifetime was spent as a newspaper man, the one thing that he cherished in addition to his family and faith.
Ray and his wife, Jeanne, owned the Salem TimesRegister from 1965 to 2001. They also owned the New Castle Record, The Fincastle Herald and The Vinton Messenger, until 2001. His newspapers won over 200 state awards while he was at the helm. He purchased his first newspaper, The Clinch Valley News, at 24 years of age.
Ray was a member of the Virginia Press Association (VPA) and served on the Board of Directors for five years. He served as VPA Treasurer, Secretary, Vice President, President Elect and President. He was the 100th president of the Association in the year 2000.
Ray was the 2006 Roy W. Henrickson Outstanding Citizen of the Year recipient for the Salem Rotary Club; the Recipient of the Charles Brown Award, for Roanoke College; Business and Employer of the year 1968 and the State "Partner in 4-H" Award.
He was a member of the Roanoke College Associates, Salem Rotary Club-Paul Harris Fellow, Roanoke Valley 4-H Volunteer, Board Member of The Boy Scouts of America, Salem YMCA Board, Salem Downtown Redevelopment Authority, Refugee and Immigration Service Board-teaching conversational survival English (with a Southwest Virginia accent) to a Bosnian family. He also volunteered for the American Cancer Society as a Road to Recovery Driver. After his cancer diagnosis, he raised over $10,000 for the American Cancer Society. He assisted in many community projects including Olde Salem Days, The Roanoke Valley Horse Show, The Salem Christmas Parade, The Salem Christmas Store, The Salem Food Pantry, The Salem Clothes Closet and The Better Business Bureau. He was also a former member of the Salem Jaycees, Tazewell Lions and Salem Kiwanis.
Ray was a member of the First Christian Church of Salem for 40 years. He was an Elder, a Deacon, a Trustee, and Chairman of the Church Board.
Ray published three books and continued to write a weekly column for the Salem Times Register during the last years of his life.
He was the personification of this quote from William Penn, Quaker founder of the Pennsylvania Colony. Penn said, "I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and no' defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again."
"When I die and meet God I would wish that God will say, "Ray, did you enjoy life? Did you have fun?" And I will be able to answer, "Yes I did, Yes I did."
Ray Lewis Robinson, wonderful husband and father, accomplished journalist, successful publisher, astute businessman, philanthropist and an example to us all, 1936 to 2008.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2008, at First Christian Church, Salem. Burial will follow at East Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2008, at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or First Christian Church, Salem.

Jeanne, Leslie and Cindy, I am so sorry to have just heard of Ray's (AKA "Dad") passing and was not able to be with you and give you hugs. What a wonderful man... you are all blessed to have had him as a husband and father. He was a true example of how we should all live and I treasure the time spent finding Leslie the RIGHT horse... Dad and I made a great team. Love to you all.

This gentleman loved our city so dearly and was indeed a true Salemite. Through his wonderful journalism I have laughed with him and cried with him. In years past, my father, D.E. Thompson, Sr, was one of the early morning coffee drinkers at Orange Market and enjoyed lots of laugh's with him. Our family shares in the sorrow at the loss of this wonderful person.

Leigh and family,
We are so sorry to hear of not only your loss but the loss to many with Mr. Robinson's passing. I remember reading articles that he wrote about his family that took me from laughter to tears and thinking how lucky you all were to have him and what happiness he gathered from having you all in his life. My heart goes out to you during this time.

Dear Jennie and Family,
I am so very sorry for your great loss. I will always remember Ray at the last family reunion you both attended. A group including Norman and Violet, now deceased, sang old songs we all remembered. Ray had such a nice smile, and really enjoyed the event.
My heart goes out to you. May God's comforting word's carry you through the days ahead.

To the Family of Ray Robinson:
I met Ray in my office at VWCC and had no idea who he was or the place of importance he held in the community. He was a totally unassuming, kind gentleman who reminded me of my dad. I didn't know about his background or philanthropy until I read his obituary.
He didn't talk about himself but always made me feel better about myself after visiting with him. What a unique and extraordinary person he was - I'm grateful I had the pleasure of his company before he went to be in the company of Jesus.

His obituary made it evident what a great person he was and from whom Cindy Lee inherited her "joie de vivre." I know he'll be very much missed. We'll be in touch soon--Love, Teresa & Larry Lee

Jeanne, Leslie, Cindy and families,
Words can't express how much Ray and you all mean to me and my family. While there is no replacement for him, there are so many wonderful memories of the laughter and the good will that his natural personna brought into my life. I know they are ones that will be forever cherished. I don't think Ray ever met a stranger. He was an exemplary individual, that not only shared his love of life but also taught others to love the gift of their own lives. I know that Leslie and I often worried him many years ago with our unique "excursions", yet he encouraged us to grow and explore via his own examples more than he will ever know. I love you all and while I know this is a most difficult time, please know you are not alone as God has taken his shepherd home and he watches over us still with that beautiful smile so proud of the life he lived and of each of you and especially Lina. His love shines through in the sparkle of your eyes and lights the path of his legacy to live forevermore. God Bless.

Dear Mrs. Robinson, I remember many times talking to both of you while I worked at the Salem Krogers. I always enjoyed you both and really admired Mr. Robinson for his kind ways with others and the way that God shined through him. He was a wonderful man and now his struggles are over and he is walking with the One that he so faithfully lived to serve. Just think of that new journey that he has started and those loved ones that he is seeing once again! Oh, what a glorious time he must be having. Yet I know that in your lives he left a great void , but I am praying that you find comfort in knowing that God is going to always be there to be your peace and that you also know that He cares about each of you very deeply. May your memories bring you great joy in the days and months ahead. God bless you all.!

Ray was such a wonderful man. I have looked forward to walking into church and being greeted by Ray since I was a young child. This world was and is a better place because of him and it will be a much different place without him. He has left a lasting memory on the hearts and minds of many people not only in the church but throughout Salem, Virginia, and I am sure all over the world becuase of his warm nature and joy for life.

Leslie & Family:

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I am too familiar with losing a parent. I can tell your Dad loved nothing more than to give his time and resources back to the community and that he was a generous person. I cannot tell you anything that will make this pain go away or make things easier for you, but be comforted in knowing that his soul does live on. Some of the hardest days are still ahead, so just be as strong as you can for each other. My thoughts and prayers go out to each and every one of you.

There are no words I can express of the sorrow I feel for loosing such a dear friend. The too short of time I got to know Ray on the VPA Board of Directors was not long enough but the memories and friendship will last a lifetime. I will miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

To Ms. Lina (also Mom & Grandma)

I know it will be hard to understand about your granddaddy going to heaven while you are just so young. He was always proud of you and loved to talk to me about what a special kid you were to him. Hold on to the great memories because he was a very special man. It does not seem very long ago that I saw your grandparents getting some ice cream at the Salem Ice Cream Parlor. Once again, our conversations were very sweet about that "Lina Bean" that they adore and love so much. I would share with them something funny that you said to me at daycare
I remember talking to your mother when we were on a bowling field trip this summer. She was telling me that her Dad's time on earth was getting closer to the end. You guys will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Love,

Ms. Ellen

Ray Robinson was an outstanding, faith-filled man. From childhood on, I always enjoyed reading the Salem Times- Register- it was a true example of Americana. I enjoyed working with him at Refugee and Immigration Services. He always had a humorous story to share- often about Lina!
He loved to help others and saw that as the natural outpouring of God's love in his life. I will miss his smiling face but look forward to seeing him again one day.
May God's peace fill his family.

As a Salemite, I felt that Ray was a member of my family. Ray was a wonderful, caring man who never met a stranger. His love for our city was shown every day in his wonderful Salem Times Register.
