Virginia Silcox Obituary
Virginia Ann Divers Silcox, 84, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, after a prolonged illness. She was born September 10, 1924, in Roanoke to the late John Hobert Divers and Dillard Virginia Wilson Divers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Thomas R. Silcox. Mrs. Silcox graduated valedictorian from William Fleming High School in 1941. She worked as a secretary until her marriage in September of 1943. Her husband, a World War II veteran, studied architecture at Virginia Tech. After he received his degree, the couple moved to Baltimore, Md., where they raised their four children. She was a devoted wife and mother. They were active members of Ascension Lutheran Church in Towson, Md. Virginia and Tom were avid golfers. They and several close friends formed a bridge club and played together for many years. After living in Baltimore for more than 40 years, they moved back to Roanoke in 1993. Virginia is survived by her four children, Thomas R. Silcox Jr. and wife, Chris, of Laurel, Md., Dane S. Silcox and wife, Kimberly, of W. Hartford, Conn., Lorrie S. Murray and husband, Don, of Richburg, S.C., and Janine S. Hinz, of Williamsburg, Va.; sister, Betty D. Overby, of Roanoke; brothers, John D. Divers, of Cloverdale, Va., and R. Donald Divers, of Roanoke; and grandchildren, Ryan and Nicole Silcox, Lindsay, Robbie and Matthew Silcox, Julia Murray, and Emily and Alissa Hinz. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Patton Saul for his dedicated attention to their mother during her seven-year illness. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Rosalind Hills Baptist Church or a charity of the donor's choice. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2008, at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church by the Rev. John Divers. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
