James Pettry Obituary

James Larry (Pete) Pettry, 73, of Christiansburg, Va., left this life on Monday, September 29, 2008. Born in West Virginia on January 27, 1935, he was the son of the Reverend Henry Lee and Gracie Hollandsworth Pettry. He is survived by his devoted wife, Cecille Vest Pettry. Also surviving are his daughters, Sharon Zeitz (Kevin), of Pilot, Va., and Debbie Latham (Tommy), of Hollywood, Md.; and stepdaughters, Shelby Collins (Billy), of Goldbond, Va., Sandra Ibrahim (Salah), of Christiansburg, Va., and Sharon Steuck (Dan), of Fontana, Calif. He leaves behind their grandchildren, Tina Orr, Lisa Bales-Assad, Lori Mullins, Jason Bales, Billy Gillespie and Stephen Steuck; greatgrandchildren, Brianna and Haley Orr, Zachary and Sarah Assad, Mandolyn Mullins, Drew and Terra Bales and Kyle Gillespie. He was preceded in death by brothers, Willie, Maltbie, Roy and Harry; sisters, Bertie Anderson, Guyda Roop, and Imogene Reece; and grandson, John Gillespie. His surviving sisters are Eugenia Hall (Ken), of Lincolnville, Maine, and Pauline Goad (Hanford), of Indian Valley, Va. "Pete" and his sister, Ossie Cox, of Indian Valley, Va., always close in life, departed life on the same day. Throughout his life he remained close to his family. "Pete" was a lifelong Democrat and proud Union Member, having retired from the Lynchburg Foundry in Radford, Va. During his retirement he enjoyed spending time with their family and friends. He will be sorely missed. The family will receive friends at the Horne Funeral Home from 9 until 11 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2008. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday in the Home Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard H. Horne with interment to follow in Huffville Cemetery, Floyd County. Pete will be missed by all who knew him. Many of his friends have come to know him through his participation in political campaigns and union affairs. That is how I got to know him many years ago. He was wonderful to work with during this events.
