Preston Thompson Obituary

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want Psalm 23:1 On Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at 9 p.m., the boat docked at Carilion Roanoke Memorial and Deacon Preston Thompson Jr. got on board to be with his Heavenly Father. He was born on February 22, 1928, in Bluefield, W.Va., the son of the late Minnie Lena Holly Kyle.

He coached and refereed sandlot football for both Inner City and YMCA recreation clubs, boxing, little league girl's softball and baseball for many years throughout the Roanoke Valley. He also played fast pitch in the men's softball league and was the catcher for the Roanoke Dodgers. He enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and was an avid tournament bowler with the GoodTimers bowling league, having traveled to both regional and national competitions and received several high score awards.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Edith Edwards Thompson; six children, Linda (Allen) Tucker, Arthur Edward (Mollie) Thompson, Patsy Thompson, Betty Wheaton, Jacqueline (Fred Sadler) Mobley, Robert Preston (Karma) Thompson; five grandchildren, Christi Wheaton-Bristol, Tomerra Dominic Macauley, Kimberly Bonds, Angela (Paul) Montella, Brian Thompson; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher Johnson, Jesse Ferguson, Jewel Macauley, Kenneth Bristol Jr., Justin Alvin Macauley, Keyeric Bristol, Kamisse Thompson, Keyvon Bonds; one great-great-grandson, Brayden Johnson; one daughter-in-law, Angeline Rebecca Thompson; one sister-in-law, Scottie (Paul) Reeves; one brother-in-law, James (Nyra) Edwards; nephews, David (Karen) Hale, Darrell Hale, and Tony Hale; and several other relatives and was a beloved friend to many. To the Thompson family you have our deepest sympathies. Deacon Thompson will be greatly missed by us all. He was a dear friend to the Jackson family. I will cherish the fond memories of him being my Boy Scout leader and mentor. He would always greeted me with a big smile, firm hand shake and a kind word.

Edith and Family,
This afternoon, James and I were deeply saddened to hear of Preston’s passing. Unfortunately, because of time we are unable to attend the services. Please accept our heartfelt sympathy.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Know that:
God is our refuge and strength, a ever-present help in the time of trouble. (Psalm 46:1)
It is our prayer that you will feel God’s comfort, love, peace, joy, and most of all His presence as you go through this difficult time.
Love,
James and Nyra Edwards

Granddad, I am going to miss those strong, reassuring hugs that you always gave me! Everytime I think of you I always remember your quiet strength. When I was little, I would always come sit with you to watch T.V. upstairs because I knew that wherever Granddad was, there would be some peace and quiet! As the good Lord said, "peace be still" and I know that you are now resting with our Father--in peace. I love you, Granddad.

Love,
Angela

To Mrs. Thompson, Art, and Robert,
Deacon Thompson was a good man that loved life and was a beacon to the youth of the Roanoke Valley. I remember coming to your home and hanging out with Robert during my high school years. Mr. Thompson will truly be missed, but know that he has gone to a better place and that everyone will see him again some day.
