In January of 1962, while a freshman at Va Tech I was hitchhiking to Floyd from Blacksburg on a Saturday afternoon in January.I usually did not have to wait very long for a ride when I hitchhiked but luck wasn't going my way that afternoon. For the better part of an hour I stood in a drizzling rain and had been passed by a number of cars when Coach Mathews drove by and gave me a lift to Floyd.
That is a moment in my life that I have never forgotten. On that day he became in my mind one of the most outstanding men I have ever known. I have always been grateful and I have no doubt that many will always remember him the way I do and he will be greatly missed.
