Dorothy Holcomb Obituary

Dorothy Turner (Dot) Holcomb, of Roanoke, Va., passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at the age of 84. She was predeceased by her parents, Wiley Bryant Turner and Lena Mae Gray Turner. Dot's wit, intelligence and good nature brought smiles to those around her. She valued laughter, and her friends at Elm Park Estates. Dot was an amazing woman, who had a lengthy career in public relations with businesses all over the country, including serving as publicist in charge of on-air promotions for Screen Gems of Hollywood, Calif., and publicity director for the Museum of SciencePlanetarium in Miami, Fla. Prior to retirement, she handled promotion for the spiritual organization of ECKANKAR. Previously, she had served as branch director of the Heart Association in Miami; executive assistant to the president of the Gilbert Marketing Group in New York City; and executive secretary of America's Junior Miss Pageant in Mobile, Ala. She married Joseph E. Baxter in 1944, but he was killed in war less than four months later. Her marriage to G. William Holcomb in 1948 ended in divorce in 1962. Dot will be missed by all those she touched. Private arrangements handled by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. At Dot's request, there will be no visitation or service.
