Joyce Roy Obituary
Joyce E. Bingham Roy, of Stone Mountain, Ga., died on Sunday, October 12, 2008. Mrs. Roy was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and was married to Robert L. Roy Jr., who died in 2001. She was educated at Syracuse University and University of Vermont. She was a psychometrist employed at University of Vermont; Alleghany County Mental Health Department, Cumberland, Md., and as a member of the Diagnostic and Advisory Team for State Department of Mental Health, Maryland. She taught in public schools of E. Longmeadow, Mass., and was adjunct faculty, New River Community College, Dublin, Va. She was also employed by Social Security and Railroad Retirement for purposes of Disability Determination. Ms. Roy was a gifted psychologist /psychometrician who helped and touched many lives throughout her professional career. She had an insatiable interest in history and in genealogy documenting not only her own family history but helping countless others do the same; she served in local, district and state office for the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); Governor of Society of Mayflower Descendants in Commonwealth of Virginia; state and local offices Colonial Dames 17th Century; organized Captain William Pepper Chapter US Daughters of 1812, and served as a President; organizing President of Captain Christopher Newport Chapter of Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century; member of Society of Daughters of Colonial Wars; Heraldic Society of First Families of Massachusetts; Founders of Norwich Connecticut and member of the United Empire Loyalists of Canada; Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims; Society Daughter of American Colonists; and The National Society Magna Charta Dames. She was a member of Episcopal Church and the AAUW. She was a person who deeply cared about others and her beloved animals. She had an infinite curiosity about the world, was an avid reader and gardener as well as an adroit conversationalist. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Garth Bingham-Roy and Lynne Morelock-Roy, of Stone Mountain; two grandchildren, Althea and Ian Roy; by her niece, Laurie Ann Ferrell, of Decatur, Ga.; nephew, David Bingham Porter, of Boston, Mass.; and grand nephew, Daniel E. Ferrell, of Atlanta, Ga. A memorial service will be held at a later date with inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery. Donations may be made in her memory to biomedical research.
