Thomas Smith Obituary

Thomas Floyd Smith, 67, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2008, at his home in Crescent City, Fla. Formerly of Buchanan, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas Smith Jr.; his mother, Virginia Rhodes Smith; father, Harlen C. Smith; and two brothers, James Smith and Michael Smith. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Dessie Cash Smith; his four daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Donald Hinton, of Port Lucie, Fla., Laurie and Jordan Levy, of Malabar, Fla., Patricia and Shane Schwochert, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Rachel and James Coleman, of Sacramento, Calif.; five sons and daughters-in-law, William (Billy) and Leslie Smith, of Port Lucie, Fla., Bryan and April Smith, of Crescent City, Fla., John and Dana Smith, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Matthew Smith, of Crescent City, Fla., and James David and Sandra Austin, of Roanoke, Va.; 18 grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Loyd and Shirley Smith, of Palatka, Fla.; sisters and brother-in-law, Sandra and Harold Helmig, of Cocoa, Fla., Anita Crosby, of Florahome, Fla., and Susan Smith, of Florahome; sister-in-law, Juanita L. Smith, of Buchanan; aunt, Annie Rhodes, of Buchanan; uncle, Samuel and wife, Karen, of Hampton, Va.; favorite nephew, James Allen Smith, of Palm Coast, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Thomas was retired from the Boilermaker's and Ironworker's in which he worked for 45 years. He was a Sgt. in the United States Army 1st Calvary Division. He served in Korea. He was a member of the Golden Knights Parachute Team since 1963. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, member of the VFW, and a member of the Blue Ridge Band of Cherokees. He had many friends through his walk of life. His closest friends were Johnny Conzelez ,of Colorado, Hubbard Williams, of Kentucky, Chief Jerry Taylor, of Big Island, Va., Frank Dickerson, of Buchanan, and Robert "Red" Barbour ,of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, 2008, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Pastor Burt Franks officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 25, 2008, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, 540-254-3000.

Dear Dessie & Family,I am so sorry for the sadness you guy's are feeling.I think of the long hours that Tommy & I spent im each other on the computer day's,night's,month's&year's there were alot of laugh's &joke's I won't forget.When you moved to Fla.a part of me left to.I love you & miss you so badly.I never got to say good bye to Tommy one day I will see him again.Tommy, was also my weather man he kept up with the weather here in Roanoke and would keep me posted on what was going on.So if I didn't watch the new's he would let me know.
