Betty Mitchell Obituary

Betty Ann Mitchell was born on November 30, 1934, to the late Daniel and Nora Black in Radford, Virginia. Betty was the youngest of 12 children, (nine who preceded her in death). Betty was raised and educated in Radford. As a young girl, Betty accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined the First Baptist Church of Radford. She was a warm and loving child who grew into womanhood as a beautiful, loving, nurturing adult. Fifty four years ago, Betty was united in Holy matrimony to Fred Mitchell, of New River, Va. From this union four children were born, Ernest, Anthony, Faye and Larry. In the early 1950's, Fred and Betty relocated to Philadelphia, Pa. where they pursued their careers and lovingly raised their children. Betty followed her heart and became a nurse. She worked tirelessly for over 30 years, 24 of which were spent as a private duty nurse for the Novicks family. Betty generously gave of her time to family and friends. She was devoted to her family, and her door was always open to friends as well. Her love of family and friends was matched by her love of cooking. She was an excellent cook and we will miss her many holiday meals. Family, friends and relationships were extremely important to Betty. Her entire purpose in life was to insure the success and happiness of her family. She made many sacrifices throughout her life to make her goal a reality in the lives of her children and others. Betty always kept her home a showcase of beauty, elegance and serenity. Her family reciprocated by keeping their homes in beauty and style as well. Left to rejoice in her memory: her husband, Fred; her children, Ernest, Anthony, Faye and Larry; her brother, Silas Black, of Phoenix, Ariz.; her sister, Nellie Edmonds, of Cleveland, Ohio; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Gloria Jean Austin and Frank, of Detroit, Mich., Othello Young and Albert of Washington, D.C., Helen Jo Hillman and William, of Albuquerque, N.M.; son-in-law, Kelvin Lee; daughters-in-law, Julia Mitchell and Deborah Mitchell; grandchildren. Dianna and Jason Mitchell, Nicole and Kelvin Lee, all of Radford; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 8, 2008. at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church at 1730 West Street, Radford, Va. Interment will follow in the New River Cemetery in New River. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church. The Mitchell family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford. www.mullinsfuneralhome.com

We were completely shocked and very saddened when we heard about Bettys passing. The little Jamaican lady that worked with her told us on New Years Eve. Betty was like ray of sun light whenever she came into the Narberth Acme. We will miss her so very very much. You all have our heartfelt sympathy.

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. In the presence of the Lord, there is fullness of joy. At His right hand are pleasures for evermore. May God heal your broken heart; bind up your wounds; and provide you with the comfort, joy, and peace that passes understanding! You are in our prayers.

The Family of Betty Ann Mitchell

A WORD OF SYMPATHY

Tears of grief can blind us
So that a bend in the road –
Such as a loved one’s death,
Seems like the end of the road.

But through our tears of love
God lets us see His Son
Welcoming to Heaven
Our dear departed one.

So we’re consoled to know this:
With Christ they’re not alone.
Death just a bend in the road
That leads God’s children home.

We LoveYou,

Vic Carter
