Dear Kelly Family,
It was with deep sadness that I learned that VA Tech had lost one of her finest. I was a student in the early 80's and Dr. Kelly had great patience with novices such as me. I tell the stories of Meats lab still after all these years. I remember with great fondness the joy that Dr. Kelly seemed to radiate. There was no doubt that he loved to teach and we were all blessed to be his students. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. We have lost a truly wonderful teacher and friend.

To the family of Dr. Kelly,
I have so many fond memories of Dr. Kelly and the meat judging team at VA Tech in the late 1980's..... driving through rush hour traffic in Houston TX to practice at a beef plant, many early Saturday hours of judging practice in cold lockers, and loads of fun wherever he took us. He was a favorite professor and will be so dearly missed by all.
Accept my heartfelt condolences.

Kellys--my dear friends. My sorrow for you and myself is so great. The memories of all our shared times are such treasures. From when I was a young sprout and called Bob "half-hair" because of his buzz cut until our summer get-togethers when you came to Wisconsin to do geneology research, our times together were so much fun. The time we brought our grandson, Pat, along when we visited Shadow Lake was one of the best. Bob always felt he had to entertain us when we were there. That particular time he took us for a "sight-seeing" tour on which we visited a newly constructed car wash in a nearby village, drove up a narrow mountain road that I was sure would result in our going off the edge and "sniffed" a nearby stock yards, all the while being entertained by Bob's wry wit with his "tour guide" descriptions. On the way home Patrick said, "That guy ought to cut a record. He could make a mint!" We will all miss him. God bless.

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.
Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?
Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still;
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's Will.
There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth--
You shall rest in Jesus' land.
When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

It is with sadness that I learned of Dr. Kelly's passing. As a student of his in the early '80s, I remember well wonderfull evenings after Meats Lab "Cleaning Up" with Doc, Leon and Wendy and playing knock rummy. He was a true asset to VPI&SU and his legacy will live on in thos of us he touched with his warmth and knowledge.

To the family of Dr Kelly,
What an awesome individual! He will be missed by so many and our thoughts and prayers are with the family. He was my professor in the 80's and meat judging coach. He taught me to enjoy what I do and believe in who I am. I spent many hours in the meat lab with him and learned so much. There are many fond memories and stories I have of Doc and so enjoyed the stories that he told. He gave so much to every student and never asked for anything in return. God Bless.

Dr. Kelly will be very missed by everyone at Virginia Tech, especially those of us who had the pleasure of meeting him. He has done so much for the department of Animal Science, as well as Block and Bridle and for that we thank him. His family are in my thoughts and prayers.

To the Kelly Family,
I first met Dr Kelly in the late 60's when my first husband, Keith Digby, worked in the Meat Lab with Dr Kelly and Leon. When the Food Science Dept was established I served as department head secretary for 10 years. I always enjoyed being around Dr Kelly. He had a great sense of humor and always made you feel comfortable. I am sorry to learn of his passing. May your wonderful memories help carry you through this difficult time.

To the Kelly Family,
I have grown up with you and ate many dinners in your company. Your Dad had a sparkle in his eye and a smile on his face more times than not. He bravely faced his life and death and he will be missed by me. Accept my heartfelt condolences.

To the Kelly Family,
I worked for Dr. Kelly for many years at Food Science. He was so funny and always seemed to be in a good mood. He was definitely one of my favorite professors to work for and all his students loved him. He will be missed. God bless and comfort your family at this time.
